Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Well, NO did dodge a bullet.
The flood the scenarios were based on a "right" approach of a cat 3 or a cat 4/5 hitting basically anywhere.
That did not happen. Thankfully!
Instead, we had a cat 3 that just was not quite strong enough to flood as much as the worst-case scenario. But, we still had a disastrous storm that has killed people, flooded many parts of the eastern city sections, left people homeless, and taken down buildings.
Further east, the storm surge was horrendous.....more like a cat 5 storm....and many probably dead in the Gulfport area.
Excellent points indeed.
For all we know, she was going to
sell the diapers.
She only got caught w/diapers. She
may have stolen other items but didn't
get caught w/those.
Aw Mike, this thread is intended to share information for FReepers and their families in Katrina's path--not a flame war bacause one FReeper thinks looting is justified...
It is going to take a lot of time to clean up.....and unfortunately, find the bodies.
I just saw a piece of that on WDSU (though I'm more listening to them than watching)
I'm at the beginning of the thread. Just moved back to NYS from Monroe, GA in Walton County. Hope all my friends there are safe. Prayers for Father Dan at St Anna's, especially!
If the lady had stolen only one pack of diapers, it might have been needed, still wrong. But the lady I saw on camera had a years worth of the poop catchers, hardly justifiable.
Agreed. I'm done with the situation and responding to the poster.
are you seeing this video on MSNBC - Scarborough is talking so much, he isn't telling us what this is video of - what location.
My take - not riot breaking out, but folks in the Dome are done with that - but there is two feet of water, and the authorities cannot turn the refugees loose, yet.
So far, Monroe seems to be OK. The bulk of the Atlanta area damage is in Carroll Co.
Post your pix here, thanks.

Dang, Mike, where do you find them all?
(and WHERE do you get your patience?)
I think it's my deodorant. ;)
Wow, I think you need to take your meds and have a nap.
I've changed a lot of diapers, can't say I'm agile enough to change them in 10 feet of water though. You have to be 12 to get scuba certified and most kids are out of diapers by then.
Care to qualify just who this 'THEY' is that you are talking about?
Take an hour off to calm down.
