Mayor Ray Nagin said that 200 people were stranded on rooftops in the Lower Ninth Ward and several bodies are floating in the water in the Bywater neighborhood and in Eastover.
Nagin made the announcement in his first press briefing after Hurricane Katrina slammed just east of the city, but did plenty of devastation to New Orleans.
Nagin said that the 200 stranded people included 20 police officers who were riding out the storm at their homes in preparation to take over shifts from other officers. He said that boats would be dispatched on rescue missions later in the afternoon.
Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.
Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage.

I'd bet you didn't feel that way on 9-11, did you?
Should the government have stayed out of that, too?
You were right there at Ground Zero, Huck; how can you be so cruel to these people?
AMEN BROTHER... I'm copying this post into my journal it's so good. Dearest and I were just talking about this today and why the Pope said 'beware of capitalism'.
Wow...very eloquent. Great post, rdb3.
Hope you can ditch that wheelchair soon, FRiend. :)
Howlin my friend, no one fusses when someone else's ox is gored.
You want practical, Huck? How's this:
No federal aid, specifically in this case could have some very undesirable outcomes, and end up costing us (the taxpayer) even more in the long run. Socially, economically, and in terms of public health issues.
Compassion for others. In this case, it's not only the RIGHT THING TO DO to help others, it's also in your best interests as both a taxpayer and a citizen.
Gnaw on that for a bit.
Since I don't have anything to add to this thread that wouldn't get me banned, I'll just say I talked to onyx and she is fine. No power or damage, but she's fine.
I'm ashamed to be associated with you, even in this most tangential manner. Good grief.
GOOD. She has to live till next year June since she's my matron of honor ;-)
Me too,
I've been joking about 'Jerk of the Week'....
But some people make you glad you don't know them in RL.

Are you a christian?
Using that argument to support unconstitutional acts is what conservatives usually call "results based" thinking. Usually conservatives are against that, except when they're for it. In other words, they are no different than Justice Breyer, except that they differ on WHEN and WHY to violate the Constitution.
Can you show him the "Christian clause" in the constitution?
"May the Sovereign bestow blessings upon you in a measure equal to that which you seek for others...."
I am fully aware that there are human beings in Louisiana who "need help" to use your words.
I happen to believe in the notion that people ought to help themselves. I am willing to help as a private individual as I see fit, however I don't believe there is a grey area when it comes to using the force of government to redistribute wealth.
You know, one could say that infants are in greater "need" than the people of New Orleans since infants are totally helpless. At least the homeowners and grown people of New Orleans are physically capable of taking care of themselves.
Does this mean that I should go along with WIC and food stamps? According to your theory, and that of Karl Marx, we the government exists to give property to those in the greatest need. Therefore, infants are by definition in the greatest need, so we should give them the most.
I asked him that question because I want to make sure his beliefs as expressed in his thread are consistent. I would be very surprised to hear that Huck is a christian.
I'd be surprised if he was a bi-ped.
Acts of war and acts of God are not the same. Speaking of God, He created hurricanes didn't He? Isn't it He who brings this death and destruction? If you want to point fingers at heartlessness, why don't you take it up with Him? He moves wind and rain, not I.
See #438 for your answer. Shouldn't you capitalize the word Christian?
Answer the question. Are you a christian? Yes or no?
