Category 4 Hurricane Katrina is approaching landfall in Eastern Louisiana. At 4:00AM EDT the storm's center was about 90 miles south of New Orleans.

Most of the population of St. Bernard Parish is in Chalmette (32,000), down the Mississippi River from Arabi (8,000). The Google Earth image shows lots of oil tanks near the river, which is at a few feet higher elevation than the inland residential areas. Arabi is near the part of New Orleans that is reported flooded due to the Industrial Canal levee break. Flooding was reported in Arabi when the levee broke this morning.

Dump dishwashing liquid on it, and they'll all drown (the soap breaks down their natural water-repellant)...

And, IIRC, washes off their identification scent so any that survive will be attacked by their comrades.

It seems to be a "dodged bullet" in the sense that the old sections of N.O. weren't completely destroyed, which seemed to be a possibility when I went to bed last night.

French Quarter was high ground even before there were levees. That's why they put it there in the beginning. It can still flood, though. There are naturally occurring higher spots in the area, what they call "ridges" like Metairie Ridge.

Richer people live on higher ground, poorer people on lower ground, generally speaking.

Floods, tornadoes and jellyfish in Mississippi's Gulfport

Excerpt:

GULFPORT, Miss. — As Katrina pounded this coastal community with winds exceeding 100 mph this morning, police Lt. Mike Shaw answered one last rescue call.

"Old oaks are down on the beachfront, water is up to the second story of some of the motels,'' he recalled. "Signs are down. Power lines are down. Roofs are off.''

A tornado also struck an apartment with 10 people inside, he said, but no one was injured. There also was a report of a family stranded when their roof collapsed on them.

If I thought alligators were about about to crawl into my house was sitting in the middle of a hurricane.. well lets just say my post would be a little more high strung... I would be a total wreck. For what it's worth...when Hugo came through Charleston in 1989, it picked up the aircraft carrier Yorktown, moored at Patriot's Point, out of the mud and moved it five feet forward and five feet left. That's what somebody at Patriot's Point told me when I went and visited in 1991.

The power of these things is just unimaginable.
