IF the storm had kept up its max winds AND hit land to the west of where it did, none of these predictions were too far out of order.

Looking at Camille pics, and imagining that level of destruction in a MUCH more densely constructed area, not to mention one under sea level, and it isn't hard to see where they extrapolated that from.

Not sure who's choice it was... but we sure will miss him! He will continue doing his "Forbes on Fox," as well as specials... that's all I really know at this time.

Your orignal statement that you saw a bunch of cajun and Carville types going into the SuperDome was ignorant. I pointed that out. You won't save face by pointing out the obvious to me. I'm intimately familiar with the ethnic makeup of New Orleans, so I promise you, you have nothing to teach me in that regard.

I saw that as well. Very scary. It sounds like the water will keep rising.

It's probably been said before, but the meteorologists are in a dam*ned if the do, and a dam*ned if they don't, aren't they? Suppose the eye went west of NO, hammered the city, and they had not evacuated. Then we'd be bit*hing because we didn't take it seriously. If my house got hit and flattened, I'd appreciate having been given a heads up to move out earlier.

Where I agree with you is that the danger with what may be "hype" is that it lessens the chance that people will evacuate in the future.

I was also thinking of the elderly - no family, unable/can't drive - heartbreaking.

Has the back side of the eye hit the N.O. area yet? I'm cubicle-bound, with no access to streaming anything as my office has it blocked.

Another thing I was wondering about - did the traffic jams on I-10 and the other roads clear or where there people still stuck on them when this thing hit?

"Can anyone confirm a hole at dead center, or is it just near the middle?"

Earlier they showed one hole in the center about seven feet and two other holes probably from sheading skin of the dome.

That is not a bad thing because that would release some of the pressure in the dome and take some stress from the super structure.

Try the ABC link at the beginning of the thread.

Someone on the phone reporting that their relatives in east NO by the breach are trapped in their attic and/or on their roof. Emergency services can't go out to help. Lady on the phone is pleading for help for these people.

According to Weather Channel reports from these same reporters yesterday, this location (Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS) is a half-mile from the beach.

They had the mgr. of this facility brag yesterday that everything would be business as usual here (meals would be served on schedule) and that the windows were tested to withstand 160-180 mph winds...though he conceded they leaked @ 180 mph.

It seems something else must be leaking @ 145 mph winds, then, eh?

"Without the river containing silt, it could cut deeper into the channel and carry that load out into the Gulf...making the river lower. However, with the silt load deposited, the elevation of the river increases as the city subsides.

Uh, the river DOES "...carry that load out into the Gulf"--why do you think the isthmus got built in the first place. Add to that the fact that they dredge the river regularly to KEEP the channel open deep enough for ocean-going vessels, so I still don't see silt deposition being of any signficant consequence.

The problem is that with the isthmus "channelized" south as far as it is, the silt is deposited over the "Gulf abysss" (or whatever the name is for the demarcation between the continental shelf and "deep water", and so is lost to any possibility of "marsh-building".
