Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I wouldn't leave out the fact that it was public construction and lord knows how many payoffs, how much under spec material, questionable inspections, etc., were a part of that deal.

All local stations making a run for it by midnight, transferring TV to Baton Rouge and the LSU campus.

911 now closed in Jefferson Parish.

Early this morning, I believe it was FOXNews I heard report New Orleans was under mandatory evacuation, but soon after that, I flipped to The Weather channel, and their anchor said the Mayor was about to announce a mandatory evacuation.

When the big blow is over, when the blame game starts, the Mayor will blame all problems on anyone and everyone but himself and his administration.

I heard today that the winds on the western side of the hurricane are the strongest.

Actually it's the area to the right and above the eye, the Northeast quadrant, that is the most dangerous because of the counter-clockwise motion of the storm. If the eye of the storm comes up to the west of the city, that will be the worst possible situation.

All that was missing from his opening statement was a mention of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Here's my favorite treat:

1 bag of square pretzels ("Snaps")
1 bag Hershey's kisses

Put the pretzels in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Put a kiss on top and cook for 4 minutes in 350 oven or until chocolate is soft. Take them out and top them with another pretzel. (smoosh them down)

I add some salt on top.

You will be addicted.

Oh gosh, that looks terrible.

I hope you had insurance, I'm sure you did.

I still haven't decided which is worse, hurricane, earthquake or almost tornado which are what I have experienced so far. I think all are frightening and particularly when they hit at night which seems to happen to me most of the time. Wind can be very frightening. When I first moved in here, before I had cable installed or Internet we had a big storm with 80+ mph winds in the middle of the night. [obviously I had no clue it was coming] Being in the dark with no electricity and the walls shaking is horrible. Bottom line I guess all of Mother Nature's storms can be devastating, but this category 5 could be the worst.

"A hurricane...is an efficent way to disperse heat through the planet and then out into space".

So more hurricanes means the planet is warming up?

The mayor and to a lesser extent the governor dropped the ball here.

The thing is to help people, not apportion blame. That being said, they clearly did not rise to the occasion.

I've got two words for the already-finger-pointing Chris Matthews: Rush Limbaugh. At noon tomorrow, Matthews' shameless attempts to pin this on the President will be exposed.
