Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I started to list the reasons as to why, but I'm not going to do the legwork for you. Ignorant is a strong word to use in describing the comparison, but it sure fits.

As I see this mayor...I keep wondering...if he has actually EVER been in a major hurricane!!!??? Does he have a clue??? I know he's been WARNED over and over again...at times he looks like a deer in the headlights of a car.
Continuing to pray for all the folks in the path of KATRINA...the monster...
He's originally from Mississippi.
My interpretation of this NWS warning is...New Orleans is history, as in effectively wiped off the map. Also this thing looks to be headed right up the Mississippi River, so we could expect river flooding from the whole Southeast to wash down on NO as well in the aftermath. Prayers on the way...I regret never having visited.

Shep Smith on Fox now driving into town to help with coverage...says roads are a "parking lot". Winds are picking up...when darkness falls, congested interstates with tropical force winds tonight could be madness.

Shep is just ticked that they canceled the original shuttle launch that was all set up to film live.
If they lose power, how will the Superdome stay cool and how will they get air?
Shep should stay out. He'll be there a long time... if he survives. I see the other reporters there also by the Dome and wonder if they realize what's about to happen and what they'll be caught up in.

A lot of news accounts these past few hours referred to NO gov't officials as always having "worried" about this scenario, but little in the way of "planning" for it. I think that was the point of Suhayda's work. To make them plan.

Who Is this mayor? And when was the evacuation ordered?
What I don't get is this is the city that has bragged they have a plan to deal with a big storm.
Their plan seems to be to talk with lawyers to decide if they can enact an evacuation.
Why aren't they using school buses to help folks out of town?
