Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

"superdoom"

Your typo might end up being Tuesday's newspaper headline in the event of a structural failure.

I can't believe that they don't have some plan in place to help the elderly and the stranded tourists get out of town on busses or trains or something! What will happen to those people?

See my last reply at 145

It doesn't look good.

"Anyone else annoyed by President Bush blathering on about Iraq after his comments about New Orleans? "

I expect that the people of iraq appreciate being remembered; this is a pretty important time for them as well.

Besides, as soon as this becomes a reconstruction/recovery project he will be taking hits for both places.

Didn't that major say last nite that he had to ck with his legal team about evac orders? Do I remember that correctly? I wonder what legal issues he had?

(btw, the usual posters always blame Bush!)

If their house that's next to a levee, is still standing, it will be a miracle. I'm so sorry, Miz.

The military can move lots of people fast. You load them onto cattle cars, 5 ton flatbed trailers, deuce and a halfs and pack them in like cattle.

I posted like that early this morning, half joking. It ain't no joke now. Could have been done much earlier.

Yet, it still may veer. It may veer.

Mobile area voluntary evacuations begun, per Seidel. Looking for 20' tides. That spells trouble for I-10 Bay Bridge.

They're up in Baton Rouge right now, staying with other relatives

Hopefully they are not near the Mississippi River. I would think that would be a major problem, too.

The mayor said the SuperDome can stand 200 mh winds.

Be warned: this is the very same mayor who didn't think he had the power to order an evacuation.

Usually a President calls in national guard to help when the govenor of a state requests it....usurping a govenor's authority is a fine way to mess up our chain of command.

Is that rotation I see out in the eastern Atlantic?

From the National Hurricane Center:

SATELLITE IMAGES AND SURFACE REPORTS INDICATE THAT A WELL-ORGANIZED TROPICAL WAVE ACCOMPANIED BY A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE HAS MOVED OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA AND IS NOW LOCATED ABOUT 450 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. THIS SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION AT ANY TIME TODAY OR MONDAY AS IT MOVES TOWARD THE WEST AT 15 MPH.
