Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

If you're gonna go, and you're a drinkin' person, best to go out sh*t-faced...

The more prayerful are sitting in church.

Not going to do him much good....the coliseum sits right across Hwy 90 from the beach. All he did was cross the street

True, but it's a tall structure made of reinforced concrete. As long as the roof doesn't blow off (and the bad news is the ticket windows face the beach), he should be good to go.

Boy, this could get real scary.

Reports keep coming in here to the west coast over our local radio, that this could possibly be absolutely devastating.

They just reported that the crowds on Bourbon St are growing and people are partying down.

Man, if it were me, I'd want to be stone sober, and get drunk after it passes.

I remember the hurricane parties before Camille. Lots of the people attending weren't around to see what really happened. Drunk in a hurricane is a really bad idea.

They say that the danger in a tornado is the sudden change of pressure as the funnel tracks over a house. The house will inflate and blow its boards all over the yard like it has exploded. The hurricane might have the same wind, but the change in pressure isn't so intense. The danger from flying objects would be the same.

I just came back today from visiting my brother in Stone Harbor NJ. We played in the surf with my eleven-year old great nephew. We were body surfing and the waves were coming in at only about 4 feet and they knocked me senseless a few times. That’s just good fun but the ocean is a powerful force and the force of the ocean and hurricanes and the storm surges they produce need to be respected.

My prayers go out to the people in this storm’s path and for the emergency personnel who will deal with the storm’s effects during and after.

While I hope it is media hype, I fear that that time has run out and the evitable worst-case scenario could come to fruition this time – a major urban city, sitting below sea level with an old infrastructure and a lot of tourists; complacent residents and a good number of poor and homeless without either the sense or means to get out of the way.
