Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

It's my understanding that it'd be very bad for NO to be to the right of the hurricane as it comes on-shore. It seems as though the right front quadrant of the storm is where the worst wind damage would come from.

What chances it'll even be left standing with winds as high as their predicting?

There will be some damage, but this is not a tornado. The hurricane could spawn tornados, and that would be very dangerous if one heads for the stadium.

" Don't they know that in 12 hours they will be floating ?"

The dead are buried above ground there...they will be floating with the snakes, corpses and the gators. Maybe that's why they're drinking Dacquaries at this point.

----I know there are a lot of websites on New Orleans and LA, but I hope people are collecting and saving as many "before" pics as possible.----

We may need a new edition of this book (and it is an excellent book) after this week.

It is tracking slightly west of the forecast track, but will probably shift later to where the NHC track will end up being dead on.

This means NO would not get hit with the eye itself, but since the eye is so far across, they will probably end up with lower cat 5 winds anyway. And major flooding.

Almost as bad as it possibly could be.

Pray for NO.

The storm quadrant that is to the east of storm direction is always the worst. The east half worse than the west. Flooding depends on topology.

We are east of Katrina, SWFL and the surge is still a couple of feet above normal -- at this distance. We still have squall clouds going over, but the winds have slacken.

Long lines of people waiting to get into the Superdome. Lines are orderly, for now, but stretch for blocks. Saying they are checking in people, checking what they are bringing in. Lots of tall office buildings surrounding the Superdome. Now they are moving the lines along...they have to get those people in ASAP.

The eye wall is 20 miles thick.....the eye is over 50 miles wide......That's a total of a 90 mile diameter

It has achieved super cyclone status....Weather service models can no longer measure this one....The NWS is just watching and learning at this point.....

I heard Shep earlier. He's staying in a hotel there. It is one of the lower profile hotels, but he's staying on an upper floor, and from what he said, it sounded like it was a hotel in the French Quarter (may be wrong on that one, but I'm pretty sure that's what he said.) And it sounded like he was going to ride the storm out there.
