Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, the forecast models are converging upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. Throughout Friday, the official track forecasts moved west, as Hurricane Katrina delayed making the anticipated northwest turn.

Just heard Gov. Blanco on Fox. She sounds a little panicky and is telling everyone to leave. I think the pre-hurricane fed. emergency declaration might have gotten her attention, finally.

The models have pulled together, and the forecasters appear to have a better feel for the track now--especially with a steady flow of recon data.
I just heard on wwl tv4 that 10 casinos will be closed down at 2am. I had left the room, but when I came in I thought I heard something about Fema being involved in that.
Kathleen Blanco - "Lots of people are not aware of this storm because last night when they went to bed the forecast was for it to go into Florida, but overnight that changed to Louisiana."
Total BS.
Says that she's worried that not enough people are evacuating. Yet she's governor and can make the evac's mandatory.
She was just on FNC and said that the President declared a state of emergency
Where is their love of multiculturalism?
She also said Max Mayfield had called her and told her that this is really serious. I can't believe it's taken her this long to figure that out.
I know Governor Blanco is acting like an idiot, but I do want to point out in her defense that she was the one who sent a letter to the President earlier today requesting FEMA/Federal Emergency Aid, and the President agreed to the request.
I'll agree with that. The animals move on instinct and millions of years of experience. The damn computers are only as good as the programmers and mathematicians who dream up the models of what hurricanes are supposed to do based on what we assume about weather patterns. Whom to trust? Hmm... how about *nature* rather than 'science' in this case?
FINALLY- just heard a phone interview with the governor of LA...she said the president has declared a PRE hurricane emergency- apparently the first time that's ever happened...and that Max Mayfield had called HER..and said this is really, really serious.
She sounded a LOT more sober than she did this afternoon...I think SOMEONE got through to her...she's begging New Orleans residents to GET OUT.
They are hypocrits.
Where the hell has she been all day ??
I'm up in PA and I knew it was really serious from watching the news
When she said that my first reaction was Mayfield realized that she wasn't taking this seriously.
i am seeing the first signs of "outflow interference" on the NW and W outer edges..you can how the clouds are stationary rather then fanning out south of the central LA coast
I wonder how many will respond to her urgings now that it is 9:00pm CDT?
Her slow responses are causing an emergency!
She seems a bit north of the track again. Maybe my eyes are not what they used to be.
I'm guessing so
