New clues to Titanic disaster

EXPLORERS have found a previously unknown site scattered with artefacts from the Titanic that could shed new light on the final moments of the world's most famous ocean liner.
"We found a new debris field about 900 metres south of the stern, which supports my long-standing belief that the Titanic began to break apart and sink further south than where she currently sits," expedition leader G. Michael Harris said today.
Mr Harris, whose grandfather led the first wave of expeditions in the early 1980s, made the 4km dive with his 13-year-old son through freezing waters in a three-man submersible.
The Orlando-based team said it had discovered personal artefacts strewn across the seabed floor that included Gladstone bags, women's shoes and White Star Line china.
It also said it had found previously unseen damaged pieces of the ship's hull that are said to support Mr Harris' theory that the Titanic rode up onto the iceberg before sinking.
Mr Harris, who returned with hundreds of hours of film footage, believes the force of the grounding damaged the plates on the underbelly of the liner causing water to poor in.
The Titanic sank off Canada on her maiden voyage on the night of April 14, 1912, with the loss of over 1500 passengers and crew. Theories about why and how she sank have abounded ever since.

After 90 years on the bottom, why still all the fascination with the Titanic?
The SS DNC sank much more recently and nobody seems to care...

Any chance of survivors still out there?

Titanic was built by professionals, Noah's Ark was built by amateur!
Wow, the ship actually rode up the side of the ice berg before it sank. Thats really interesting.
Not.
Do we get to see Leo drown again. I really liked that scene.

she hit an iceburg and sunk, end of story.Isn't that the entire plot of a 3-1/2 hour movie?

In fairness to the makers of the Titanic, she wasn't designed to end up on the top of a mountain after 40 days of drifting.

It's been reported over at DU that "Halliburton" supplied the "IWS" (iceberg warning system).

Aussie Dasher,
The Titanic is still fascinating because no one really knows what happened, in spite of potential witnesses. The arrogance of the builders/owners in saying not even God could sink the ship. And the deaths caused by the arrogance and conceit. It is the same as asking why is Stonehenge fascinating? Or the tombs of the Pharohs? Or Ayer's Rock? I think they are fascintating still because of their individual uniquenesses.

I think the fascination has to do with the "unsinkable" claim by its builders.

Well, the Titanic seems to have earned a place in modern mythology, deserved or not. It was a symbol of pride and arrogance-although the General Slocum disaster was worse. I watched The Learning Channel's special live broadcast of James Cameron's trip down to the wreckage; it was pretty cool.

"Theories about why and how she sank have abounded ever since."
No...No speculation about that, really. She hit an iceberg.
But plenty of questions about:
Why the captain ran at speed through iceberg lanes.
Why there weren't enough lifeboats.
Why the Caledonia wasn't monitoring radio.
To: Aussie Dasher
Why the Titanic? At the time it was the crowning achievement of man was all. Also a lot of people died on that ship, a lot of people with a lot of money. Widen your horizons folks have a little imagination. Geez stodgy aren't you.....

Fair enough. But why aren't people equally as fascinated by the sinking of the Dems?

Why the Caledonia wasn't monitoring radio. It was the California.
