Gay Teacher Question for Freepers (Vanity)
None | 8/17/05 | Dr._Joseph_Warren

Posted on 08/17/2005 7:58:48 AM PDT by Dr._Joseph_Warren

Question:

Ignoring all legal issues....

Would you care/object if your children's teacher was openly (not flaming) gay?

Would it make any difference if the gay teacher was male or female?

Would it make any difference if the gay person taught elementary, middle school or high school?

Ignoring all legal issues....

Would you care/object if your children's teacher was openly known to use drugs but never used them in class?

You can't really ignore the legal issues. The two situations are not analagous, unless you want to talk about a teacher who was openly known to use alcohol. In which case, I would not have a problem, either.

Well, the question itself raises further questions. What do you mean by "openly gay"? I don't know that there is much difference between open yet discreetly gay and flaming. Either one puts their sexuality in the public square or one keeps it in the bedroom with the curtains drawn. If the teacher was openly gay, they must have said or done something which would make the fact known.

If the openness came about in a way which had absolutely nothing to do with being a teacher--nothing at all--I would probably not have any objections serious enough to warrant pulling my child from the class. One whiff of the teacher telling the class anything along the lines of "My partner and I..." and I would yank said child out.

My concern is less about what the teacher does behind closed doors, and more that his/her homosexuality would be used as a "teaching moment." For this reason I'd have lots of problems with an openly gay teacher.

Although he wasn't "openly gay," I'm pretty sure that my son's first grade teacher was in fact a homosexual. There were no "teaching moments," and by all accounts he is a dedicated teacher.

Although we had some complaints about him, sexuality was never an issue.

So, no, I don't think I'd have a problem simply because the teacher was openly gay. Any discussion of the fact, however, would be completely out of line.

Agreed. No agenda pushing either- whether gay, straight, etc. Just teach my kids and let me be the parent.

I would care greatly if my child's teacher was openly gay or openly straight for that matter. A teachers sex life should never be a topic of conversation in school or with students.

If the gay teacher was male or female makes no difference.

For your third and final question, until a child turns 18 they are still under the control of their parents. If their parents choose to expose them to a sexual lifestyle, either homosexual or heterosexual that is the decision of the parents (within legal limits obviously) a teacher of minor children; and even those who have reached the age of majority but not yet graduated from high school, are still the responsibility of the parents. It is not the job nor place of a teacher to expose children to any particular sexual lifestyle outside of the biology of sexual reproduction.

No, it does not matter what grade or age a gay or straight teachers is teaching. Keep your sex life private and to yourself, it has no place in a classroom.

Gay teachers would be fine as long as they kept their sexual orientation to themselves and not broadcast and preach it. My 12 year old grandson had a gay male science teacher. This man not only flaunted the fact that he was gay but he brought his partner to the classroom.

My grandson had enough when the teacher kept getting closer and closer to him. Brushing his cheek with his fingers and stuff. I had my grandson changed from the classroom immediately. But then my grandson suffered the wrath of the liberal mind after that. He got in trouble for everything he did even if it was not really anything.

For example: He and his girlfriend were talking in the hallway at lunch time, the girl slapped him on the butt, he returned the favor. They kicked him out for sexual harrassment.

So, I have to say that if a gay teacher is out of the closet then I would not want them teaching my grand children. If they are in the closet as far as the students are concerned then I have no problem with them at all.

had one of these teachers in high school, knew her for 3 years before any students knew about it. and it took 6 months of rumours for anyone to find out for certain. she was obviously very discreet, never said anything about it, and the one time i heard someone talk about it, she ripped into the student. basic lecture was "would you ask [history teacher] if he was screwing his students?" (he was) "would you ask [a single teacher] if their picking up girls at the bars and screwing them?" she never admitted or denied it, but kept it out of class.
have a regular at my bar that is quietly gay amd teaches math. his preference is for post college men (late 20s- early 30s), he likes guys that have been in the world long enough to have proper debate and present intelectual arguement.
either teacher i would have no problem sending my child to.

But being Mormon or Jehovah's Witness is not immoral.

There are people who would disagree with you here.

Would you object to an strpper (by night) teaching your child? How about someone in the internet porn business?

No.

If I had a choice, no queers teaching my kids. But as the school keeps reminding me, I don't have a choice on any issues regarding my children's lives. We're all wards of the state, and I'm really only a person to see that homework is done and the children are fed and watered when arrive to school on time in the mornings. Any other aspects of raising my children shall be left to the school system and the state and federal legislatures.

I had one in high school (computer teacher) and he was the object of ridicule and scorn (esp. when a "rumor" came out about him in leather pants coming out of a local gay club)

I homeschool, in part because of the gay agenda. I would NOT be concerned if a person who was teaching my child was gay - as long as they were a good mentor for my child , knew the topic at hand and kept their sex life private from being a good teacher. If the topic of homosexuality, or sexuality at all, came up while teaching I would expect a good teacher to say, "that is something best discussed with your parents." and leave it at that.

Not really. Flaming implies acting like the guys on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Open means that people just know that a certain person is not straight

"Open" still means pushing an agenda(i.e the homosexual agenda).

I had a gay English teacher in the 8th grade, Mr. Beard.

He didn't parade his "gayness" around, but he was one of those who was obviously homosexual, and everyone pretty much knew what was up with him.

He had this curious pet peeve about the way the words "offense" and "defense" were pronounced in football. He insisted that the first syllable must be stressed. That was a little goofy, but we all played along.

He was a pretty good teacher and his sexuality was never an issue in the classroom. I didn't mind having him as a teacher. He was no better or worse than any of the others I had in Jr High School.

Would you care/object if your children's teacher was openly (not flaming) gay?

Absolutely, and I would remove my child from the class immediately. Homosexuality is a behavior, I would no more let my child be tought by an "open" homosexual, than I would an "open" swinger or an "open" alcoholic. Homosexuality is a self destructive behavior, largely caused by mental illness. People who do not have control enough over their urges, to where they cannot even leave their sexual picadillos behind closed doors do not remotely have the self control to be in a position of authority over children.

Anyone who is mentally immature enough to believe that "they have urges" justifies their actions has absolutely no business teaching children.

They lack the fundamental moral character to understand that human beings are not a sum of desires, but are rational thinking beings. Anyone so base in their world view to openly embrace, I am nothing more than my urges has absolutely no business being in a position of authority, let alone routine access, to children.

Would it make any difference if the gay teacher was male or female?

Absolutely not, I'd pull my kid either way. While homosexual men clearly are more predatory 1% of the population accounting for about 30% of the reported assaults, gender makes no difference as to whether they should be in that position.

Would it make any difference if the gay person taught elementary, middle school or high school?

Not at all.

Would you object to your childs school teacher being a straight, married man whose wife liked to bring home another women from time to time for hot 3 way action?

Further, would you ask him for pointers on getting your wife to do the same?

I do not want to know the sexual proclivities or fantasies or other details of the sexual practices of my teachers, my children's teachers or the people I work with. I don't want my children to either. Some things are public. Some things are private.

The inane humor on the various gay lifestyle sitcoms that the public has had inserted into the tv menu tries to get everyone to think it's all just healthy and just so much cuteness.

I had an English teacher in the 7th grade, Mr. Anderson, who painted his nails with clear polish, who sat on a high stool in front of the class with his legs demurely crossed, who lisped, who minced when he walked. He was definitely gay, and there was not a kid in the class who didn't know it. However, he NEVER advocated the lifestyle--never brought it up. He was a professional, and he loved the English language and literature, and he taught others to love and appreciate it, as well.

I was in an accelerated English program, so I suspect that his students were a bit more mature than others. Even so, I do remember joining in calling him "Mithter Anderthon," with a little wrist flick. I am sure other students berated him mercilessly.

After all these years, my overall impression is that I benefitted from Mr. Anderson's instruction. He was a very kind and gentle person. I do not know what personal struggles he went through--I do not know if he was an active homosexual. Mr. Anderson never made that a part of his instruction, and I think that may be the difference in whether I would approve of my child being taught by a homosexual or not.

P.S. Dear Mr. Anderson, if you are somehow reading this, I want you to know that you did touch a life. I pray that God delivered you from your torment.
