Question:
Ignoring all legal issues....
Would you care/object if your children's teacher was openly (not flaming) gay?
Would it make any difference if the gay teacher was male or female?
Would it make any difference if the gay person taught elementary, middle school or high school?
Wow, those must be some parties.
I tried.
I failed."
That was quick.
It is not OK for teachers to openly discuss with students (or parents) any characteristic of people the teacher likes to have sex with. That includes gender.
This is all a question of what gays you know, I guess. Leaving lesbians aside (who seem to be pretty monogamous and boring, IMO), I would be pretty surprised if most of the gay men I knew were frequenting bathhouses and orgies. But then, all of the gay men I know are doctors, lawyers, real estate agents etc.
LOL !!!! By the sheer fact that you ask " what difference does it make" Shows what a difference it makes. Ask anyone that has kids here if they believe the same things are appropriate now that they have children then before. Anyone who says they believe exactly the same way is a fool.
We were all experts on child rearing BEFORE we had our own kids.
Well, that really doesn't have anything to do with the subject of this thread.
But now that you brought it up, 100% of the Catholic priests who molested little boys are homosexual.
Ok...my husband and I spent five years trying to figure out how the heck to skip parenting and go straight to grandparenting. We eventually decided it was impossiblebut here you go, proving us wrong. The things I learn on FR. ; )
I don't want folks who get off swinging from a trapeze teaching my kids - well, at least those who feel compelled to wear a button that says "free trapeze lovers".
In other words, as soon as anyone, of any sexual lifestyle, wears their sexual lifestyle on a sleeve, I want them out of the school system. Out of my kids life. Out of a job. So would I be offended if a gay person was a teacher? Yes, if, and only if, my kids and I had to know about it...or any child had to know about it. If a person doesn't have the maturity to understand they should keep their sexuality out of the classroom, I don't want them teaching.
Looking back over my own elementary education, from the vantage point of an adult, I believe I had three gay teachers. All excellent. All who kept their sexuality and liberal politics to themselves. And yeah, some people wondered, but no one knew for sure, and that's just how it should be. I also had some teachers that I'm pretty sure were into the missionary style - but again, no one knew for sure. And that's how it should be.
I think any teacher's sexuality. Hetero or Homosexual should not be obvious to the students. I don't think it is proper for the students to speculate on the sexuality of the teacher or to discuss who the teacher may be sleeping with. I have no objection to gay teachers per se. What I object to would be any teacher trying to persuade or convince any student that homosexuality is no different that heterosexuality. Please note I would also object to any gay or non gay teacher telling my child that any of the sexual behaviors that I teach are wrong are just other lifestyle choices. So my concern is not just with homosexuality. If a gay teacher wants to teach and cares about the kids that is to be encouraged. I would expect both gay and non gay teachers to be subject to rigourous background checks to assure our children's safety.
no this is no different than doing a criminal background check.
Homosexuals participate in a recreational sex style which is has a high target directed to children. This is no different than not wanting a teacher who uses pot. I use that example because some (very few) states have decriminalized miniscule amounts and thes the legal/illigal argument does not hold.
It should be DO ask and DO TELL. This is about raising the next generation of society. Not protecting the ability of some deviant to stick his penis in another deviant.
There were kids in the neighborhood I grew up in that were not allowed to play with me for all of those reasons...I'm Jewish.
There were kids in the neighborhood I grew up in that were not allowed to play with me for all of those reasons...I'm Catholic.
There were kids in the neighborhood I grew up in that were not allowed to play with me for all of those reasons...I'm Cuban.
Grow up - get a life - and quit acting like a homosexual liberal whinning brat!@
My moral beliefs are probably different from yours. I do not consider homosexuality to be immoral, so I do not have a problem with a homosexual teaching my future kids.
Similarly, I do not consider stripping or having an internet porn site to be immoral, so I do not consider such people to be unqualified to be teachers.
Modernman,
Book a trip on a "gay cruise" and see how those so called professionals behave when they don't think anyone "outside" is watching... of just go to a gay club or bathhouse... you will find even those that are "professional" and even claim to have "committed" relatioinships... OFTEN engage in activities outside that little picket fence facade.
Certainly not all, but it is an overwhelming activist myth if you think the typical gay male is a guy in a committed monogomous relationship with another man.... or even LOOKING for that.
Hmm, was he/she pushing you for a book to read called, "Doug and his two daddies, and here have a cigarette".
JMO, a homosexual "teacher" and his/her union(the NEA)at their pow-wow, would nix the cigarette part, but push as hard(no pun intended) as they could about the "two daddies" part.
If the teacher had a history of being an excellent teacher and being able to get kids to think, learn and understand applications of the material being learned, then his or her sexuality wouldn't matter. Of course, if that teacher promoted his sexuality, which souldn't be brought up at all in a classroom, I'd have grave concerns.
All in all, why would a teacher have to state his/her sexuality at all in the class room?
I, too, work in an industry that has a very high proportion of gay people and I concur with your observations completely.
I don't want to know the sexual orientation of my kid's teachers...it's private. However, if they make a point of announcing that they are gay then they are activists out to prove something. These types define themselves based on their sexual identity. I don't want any of my kids around people like that. Discretion...I don't walk around proclaiming my sexual orientation to all the world.
All of the gays I know are that way. Well, some don't work 9 to 5 but instead the night shift but its the same none the less.
The idea that you have that most gays are out every evening having sex with 5 to 10 partners an evening every night for 10 years is the myth.
