Well, I walked out of church this morning over the Cindy Sheehan situation (VANITY)

I'll apologize in advance for this vanity post but I need to get this off my chest:

At our 10:30 a.m. mass this morning, our pastor was the celebrant. Today's Gospel was the story of Christ's meeting with the Canaanite woman and the eventual healing of her daughter. Our pastor then followed with his homily where he first related the plight of the Canaanite woman with a woman he knew who called him requesting prayers for an illness in her family which we could relate to since my wife and I are both contending with (minor, we hope) health issues.

The nest thing we know, the pastor is relating this to the "lady camped out in Texas asking for healing AND ACCOUNTABILITY" (the emphasis is my own). We sat there and listened through the sermon as he returned to the Sheehan story a few more times asking us to imagine an Iraqi woman who lost children in the same position.

Thankfully, it was pretty short and we stood for the Creed but then, immediately before the intercessions, the pastor returned to the topic.

This was too much for us so we turned and left, commenting to those around that we don't come to church to hear politics. I handed the usher my offering as we exited.

This is the first time something like this has happened in this church we have attended for the past twenty years or so and I feel pretty horrible about the whole thing.

Fortunately, the priest we had this morning was forced to flee Pakistan under a threat of assasination. At the point he may have strayed to the Cindy analogy instead he made a point about the inate evil of suicide bombers.

it will be interesting to see if the priest reaches out first to a 20 year church member to find out why she walked out.

I'm betting he does not reach out.

You should have gone (with your offering) to another Church.

Your actions will make more waves than the Pastor's opinions.

Bravo Zulu for your courage!

No apologies for the vanity. It's happening in more than your parish.

Irish GOP, does this sound familiar?

As I stated on another thread, I would have not put up this inappropriate commentary during a homily in church. I would have promptly walked out too.

And then find another parish to attend Mass at. I've done it.

Excuse me for being a butinski, but the "pastor" needs to be fully informed if he is going to "preach" on a topic.

Yes he certainly should, however I'd withhold judgement until I was certain he was. Cindy's most extreme comments haven't been covered much. That said, I doubt a retraction will be coming.

Once again, sorry for the vanity.

Not at all. This is very legit and one more great thing about FR - reporting on actual events in the real world, unfiltered. I hope you will take some action - letter, phone call, get with other parishioners - whatever works for you and let us know what happens.

Don't feel bad- I walked out of my church,Faith United Methodist Church, after Sept 11th-when I was told that using the very large rec room for two days- to collect clothes and blankets for children displaced by terrorists attacks and to collect work boots for the clean up crew volunteers there- would be an inconvenience to the other parishioners.

I walked out, have not returned and I have never felt any remorse over it.

Faith is in your heart- not in a building.

Good for you!

The last time I was at Mass it was during "Bishop's Appeal". I walked out.

I didn't go to church for them to beg money from me and others. I went to hear God's word.

Enough.

I thought about it but a confrontation didn't feel right at the time and still doesn't. Plus it was our former choir director's 80th birthday with her whole family sitting there, 3 or 4 generations so I guess you can say I'm chicken or over-accomodating, etc.

Me too, and I wouldn't have given the offering either. I'm Catholic, and sadly I will tell you that money is very importent to our clergy.

We sat there and listened through the sermon as he returned to the Sheehan story a few more times asking us to imagine an Iraqi woman who lost children in the same position.

I agree the women needs healing as she has not been able to cope with the loss of her son and her emotions have turned to hate, disrespect for others, etc, IMO.

The following may be something that you would like to share with your pastor. It offers an insight from the Iraqi side of the equation. It's on a blog and thus is getting pushed away. It's a shame it isn't posted in its entirety for preservation on FR. A tread does exist but only in excerpted form.

A message to Cindy Sheehan, Aug. 12, 2005

If your name didn'd indicate that you lived in PA (I live in FL), I'd say we had the same pastor. Mine gave an almost identical homily, and then seemed to say that it didn't really matter anyway, God didn't care if people ever became Christians or not, universal salvation was on a roll and everything was groovy.

Maybe he won't feel quite the same when a Muslim terrorist blows him up - but then, I doubt that even that would penetrate a liberal brain.

Isn't it ironic that so many of the voting base suport/almost demand that religion plays a role in forming political policy,

Give us a little more than that. Examples, please.

Welcome to the world of politics in church. I've left two mainstream denominations over these sorts of tactics and leftist based thinking. It's sad, I'm sorry it happened to you. But I simply won't tolerate it.

Maybe You can become vocal, find supporters, and challenge the pastor on his stance. Also let the church council know of your displeasure and how it may effect your attendance, and contributions (personal and financial) if it continues.
