No surprises - what isn't driven by academic interest is driven by welfare.

St. Louis is a deceptive case. The city and county are split into separate governments-- the city overwhelmingly Dem, the county much stronger Republican. Depending on how they calculate statistics, it can be deceptive of the area as a whole-- it is NOT more liberal than New York.

I look at it as a guide of where not to live.

I look at it as a guide of where:

1.) not to shop.
2.) to stop in the event nature calls.
3.) the IQ of the general population is lower.
4.) bitterness and pain are prized attributes.
5.) a mild preview of hell is available.

So, as a rule, I agree!

Dallas but not Austin or Houston? That's got to be a misprint.

I think #44 needs to be clarified. While Springfield is not exactly conservative, it would appear so compared to nearby Amherst/Northampton, home to UMASS and Smith College (and the other three colleges in the area).

The level of liberal infestation is at pandemic levels there.

I guess they were doing the biggest cities in the area, but even then, as a person who has lived in both areas, Amherst/Northampton could easily bump Boston from its lofty position.

I take issue with Birmingham and New Orleans being listed so highly here.

Birmingham and New Orleans are not liberal, they are black, and there is a difference. The votes the Democrats get there, they get because African-Americans vote straight Democratic tickets.

Birmingham is something like 71% black, and New Orleans is roughly the same. Take those two numbers, and combine this with voting percentage, and you realize, it's not ideology that drives this, it's ethnic block voting, if the Republicans can make some good gains among black voters, you'll see those margins disappear real quickly

How do they define 'city'? Because Ithaca NY should be high on that list. It's got 2 superlib centers- Ithaca College and Cornell, and a horde of academic elitists. I do believe it was the only city in which more votes were cast for Nader than Bush in the 2004 election.

Most of these Democratic cities are pretty great when you consider that the Democrats keep the real estate and labor costs cheap enough to widen commercial margins and allow a frenzy of localized business activities. After work you just drive home to the suburbs and vote Republican.

I have a hard time believing that Honolulu is more Conservative than Knoxville or Chattanooga or Peoria. I think Gary and Detroit are definitely two of the most Democratic cities but I don't think they are more liberal then Berkley or San Fran. Some of the blacks actually hold rather conservative religious values and are somewhat less liberal then people in Berkly and such areas. Though they are no doubt more Democratic. Especially if you count all of the dead people that vote in those two cities.

There has got to be something wrong with this list!

Eugene OR is home of the eco-terrorist/anarchist movement. Remember all the workers who were killed and maimed by trees “spiked” by murderous tree-huggers? Remember the riots at the WTO conference? Eugene is the breeding ground for these nuts.

You’re telling me that Memphis is more liberal than Eugene?

My tax dollars better not be paying for this pinhead, gobbledygook.

Just great. The libs here in Portland already suffer from Seattle/Frisco envy, so now they are going to ramp up their efforts to outlib. the other libs.

The list, along with the various comments posted so far indicate that the scourge of liberalism is far worse than generally believed. Everyone seems to have a story about some bastion of lefties overlooked by the list compilers. I know one for the list, Walnut Creek, California. Liberal ground zero.

I used to be a truck driver.

Once I stopped in a truck stop in Gary, Indiana.

They had dry erase boards on the walls of the bathroom stalls to stop people from writing on the walls.

I found that to be pretty funny.
