NRA may back Dem against DeWine in '06
The Hill ^ | 8/10/05 | Peter Savodnik

Gun activists angry with Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) and the state GOP are welcoming talk of Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) challenging the second-term senator next year. Frustration with DeWine hit a new high late last month when the senator was one of only two Republicans (Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island being the other) to oppose a bill shielding gun manufacturers from liability for damages resulting from the use of their products.

The vote came about two months after DeWine joined the so-called Gang of 14 to forge a judicial-nominees agreement, alienating many conservatives who felt the seven Republicans in the group had jettisoned party principle in the name of bipartisanship.

In a possible sign of just how angry conservatives were at the pact over judicial nominees , DeWine’s son, Pat, a local Republican official, came in fourth in a June 14 GOP congressional primary in the staunchly Republican 2nd District.

Ryan, in his second term, has not declared his political plans but has been repeatedly mentioned in Ohio and inside the Beltway as a possible Senate contender. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), loathed by conservatives for his outspoken opposition to free trade, tax cuts and gun rights, among other issues, also may run.

“Personally, as an individual and an ardent Republican, I would love to see anyone run against DeWine, especially Ryan,” said Rick Kaleda, the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) election-volunteer coordinator in Ryan’s 17th District. The NRA endorsed Ryan in his successful 2002 Democratic primary bid against then-Rep. Tom Sawyer.

You will note that the entire basis for this story is a single quote from an EVC; someone was speaking as an individual rather than in his capacity as an NRA volunteer.

Just because he's an Repub doesn't mean he automatically gets the support of Repubs. Let this be a message to all Repubs who want to get re-elected!

Serves him right: IF (big IF) a one-issue group is getting opposed by a particular person, it's foolish (in their eyes) to support the guy/girl/jerk/traitor.

DeSwine is indeed a RINO's RINO. ......further to the left than many Dem Senators.

I thought DeWine had joined two (2) other Rinos, both Reed and Chaffee from RI voted against S397.

We did the number on Pat DeWine because of his father's association with the Gang of 14.

I have no problem with this, the NRA supports candidates that uphold the second amendment, be they democrats or republicans.

So why is this maggot a Repub anyway? Why doesn't he just join the socialists, and let it go at that. It appears that is exactly what he is --- again the weak pansies of the RNC just let these b@stards remain in their ranks...disgusting.

DeWine isn't a real Republican anyway. But let's elect someone else in the Primary.

My bad, Jack Reed from RI is a Dem. I was following the vote on July 29 on S-397 and he was listed as a Rep. on the voting list that I was reading. Thanks for the heads-up.

Has Dewine announced that he is running for a second term? Maybe we will get lucky and he will retire.

DeWine's already in his 2nd term.

He's become terrible on gun issues, so it's hardly surprising that the NRA is looking for someone better. They're a gun rights organization, not an arm of the Republican Party. The NRA shouldn't support anti-gun candidates just because they're Republican. Blindly voting the straight ticket is part of why we have so much trouble in this state with RINO's like Taft, DeWine, and Schmidt.

I think Republicans in Ohio and the NRA ought to be real careful with supporting a Democrat who talks a good game about gun rights. Experience shows these people talk the conservative line among their red state constituents but go to D.C. and attack the president viciously, oppose the war, fight against tax cuts, etc. Need I remind everyone of our current Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid who snows Nevada voters into believing he's a conservative on a regular basis but then we know what he is when he gets back to DC. And of course let's all remember Tom Daschle, the good old down home conservative South Dakota boy who suddenly turned into a raving Manhattan liberal on the floor of the Senate.

Dewine may not be perfectly conservative on all issues. But he will be a reliable vote to support the president's program, especially on domestic and national security issues, probably 90% of the time. He will most definitely be a more reliable conservative vote than this Democratic poser will be.

Keep your heads folks! If we conservatives have a temper tantrum and start helping to elect Democrats, before we know it they'll be back in control of the Senate and the Senate committees. If you think you're not getting enough of what you want not, let's see how much you'll get of what you want then, including judge nominations. Then Democrats won't even have to filibuster. They'll just be able to kill everything off in committee. THINK! You're getting a hell of a lot of what you want now even if it's not everything. That will come to a screeching halt if Democrats take control of the Senate.

Instead of talking about how to undermine Republicans, let's talk about putting in an effort and getting a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. Use that energy you put into anger and labelling people as "RINOS" (I'm sure after this post I will be so labelled myself) to instead work on getting us to 60+ votes in the Senate and a bigger majority in the House. THEN you'll get more of what you want, NOT by handing over control to the Democrats when you'll get little or nothing. Come on, THINK, don't react.

This will be great!!!!!! Hey the NRA has already elected Harry Reid now they can give us another Democrat senator.
Thanks but no thanks morons. Take your gun bull shiite and put it where you'll need help to put it.
For any jerk who thinks electing a rat because you feel offended that a rino didn't jump high enough for you, here's a question:
If the worst happened and we woke up in Nov. of 08 with a rat president a rat senate and a rat congress, which would they do first, make it a crime to be a Republican ( exaggeration but you get it) or take a razor and cut the second amendment out of the Bill of Rights?
In case you are wondering both my wife and I are members of the NRA.

I don't think you understood the point of the article. It didn't state that Republicans were backing Ryan, and I didn't state that I'd be backing Ryan. The article discussed what the NRA would be doing.

My point is that the NRA is interested in gun rights, not party politics. They are an independent interest group, not a wing of the Republican Party. If anyone thinks the NRA wouldn't oppose DeWine just because he's a Republican, they are sorely mistaken.

For a so-called NRA Member, you seem to understand very little about their mission. If you're really concerned about this seat, get in touch with Mike DeWine and tell him he better start to find some appreciation for the 2nd Amendment. Or better yet, let's replace him in the primary with someone who actually supports the 2nd Amendment.
