Well, Carter is truly a disgrace. What the hell were Americans smoking in the 70s to vote for this lunatic?

On the heels of the Watergate scandal, the Dems would have won as long as their candidate did not drool on himself too much. Hence, President Jimmah.

Well, I didn't. The very last thing I did, on my way out of Baytown, Texas, to return to Alabama to live, was to stop at the polling place and vote against Jimmy Carter. It's to bad, too. As a Southerner & Southern Baptist, I wanted to vote for him.

But Jimmy would never state where he stood on important issues. That let me know exactly where he stood on them, and it wasn't where I was standing.

Thank God, at least, he's disassociated himself from us Southern Baptists. He was embarrassing the hell out of some of us.

Carter was the worst President in my lifetime. He probably won because Ford was a RINO. But, I probably should thank Carter, because I think he had a part in electing Reagan.

Rebel banker explains it very well, but I would also add this comment:

Without Carter we might not have gotten Reagan elected in 1980. So for that we should be thankful.

IMHO, not as much as people think. I don't think that Carter won the '76 election as much as Gerald Ford lost it. Moreover, I don't accept the conventional wisdom and excuse that it was Ford's pardon of Nixon that defeated Ford. Gerald Ford lost because he was the president during the loss of a war. The TV pictures of Saigon falling appearing on American TV was the nightmare that LBJ tried to avoid by escalating Vietnam. The nightmare became real for Ford because the country won't vote for a "loser", whether it's his fault or not.

Both Carter and Clinton inherited the White House, they did not "win" their elections outright. That's why both of these morons became president, by default.

It wasn't a "smoking" thing. It was a Watergate thing.

In addition to that, it was Watergate that gave us this POS as prez. I thank God every day we then had The Great Ronald Reagan!

I voted for him in 76. Come to think of it, it must have been something I was smoking because after a couple years of detox I voted for the Gipper in 1980.

If the Demos want to return to power they had better start handing out free weed along with their literature.

Carter ran in the first election for which I was eligible to vote. My friends and I argued the pros and cons of Ford and Carter ENDLESSLY. Many could not vote for Ford, because he pardoned Nixon. Many would not vote for Carter because he was unknown. At the booth, I changed my mind and picked a name at random from the other political parties. (Anyone remember Maddox?) Basically, wasted my vote. I did not trust myself to vote for several elections after that. Since I've started voting again, I also try to be well informed of the various candidates' positions and beliefs.

In short, I wasn't smoking anything, but I was young and stupid.

In 1976 I was 20 years old, in the USMC (Camp Lejeune, NC) and voted for Jimmy Carter by absentee ballot.

(Going from my recollection of events):

With the Watergate scandal and Richard Nixon, remember also tht Richard Nixon stepped down and was pardoned by VP Gerald Ford - people were pretty fed up with what was viewed then as corruption by the Republicans. The Democrats could have ran Mickey Mouse and won. So they did.

Carter was from the South, a Baptist who talked about being born-again, and was an officer on a nuclear sub. Looking at him as a candidate with the facts available to the voters at the time, he seemed to be a good choice to set the government right and keep America strong.

Just goes to show you, I guess...

I was there. People were insanely mad at Nixon and more insanely mad at Ford for pardoning him. A lot of people not just the extreme left wing felt this way. Carter was thought to be an honest man who would clear out the sleaze. I am not defending this I am just telling you the way it was. I didn't vote for Carter.

The alternative was little Jerry Ford. He was a total loser
who cut a back room deal with Nixon. He was no more than
a political hack. None of us knew just how bad Carter would turn out.

I agree that Carter has become a totally worthless socialist
jerk. If my memory is correct, even Clinton didn't think
much of him. It can't get much worse tha that...
