Those of us who were submariners probably have a more up-close-and-personal relationship with the Russian Navy than anyone else.

Obviously, I can't say the same. My interest in the welfare of these sailors comes mostly from the fact that my son is a submariner, but that's hardly the same thing. My caring about their welfare comes mostly from the fact that we are all God's children.

Any one of us that have actually been at depth on a submarine understand that there but by the Grace of God, go I.

I'm glad they're safe.

We demonstrated, again, not only the will to do good but, far more importantly, the ability.

I'm well behind reading the thread, but that's a great observation!

Ask Centcom about French and German military aid after 9/11. You are aware that both French and German forces fought as part of the Coalition?

Anyone know where the Brits base their Scopio underwater craft?

It was flown out from Prestwick Airport in Scotland. That's very near the Clyde Submarine Base. It's probably from there.

thanks the Royal Fleet of the Great Britain for help & the americans& the japonese for support. Guys from sub looks weary, but it's o'k . The capitan said that they didn't give up hope till the last. The Scorpio-45 cut the antenna & net & AS-28 surface itselfs. (Technically it was o'k)The emertion took about 3 min. The capitain opened hatch & reported "Everybody's alive on the bord". Men showed real courage. Again thank you.

Well.....Yesterday at our SubVets meeting our guest speaker was one of the original "Tuskegee Airmen." He opened his talk by observing that, "There are more airplanes in the sea than submarines in the sky."

Are you kidding?
He is a thug and a murderer. Used to be head of the KGB. Once a rat, always a rat.==

Putin is former KGB intellegence colonel (like CIA colonel). He never was KGB head.
Just think.

KGB was disbanded alltogether with soviet structure when USSR was disbanded. In 1991.
Putin was born in 1951. SO in 1991 he was 40 years old.

The KGB head post belonged to member of Politberau and in rank of general-colonel (4 stars general). Usually guy was 60+ years old. Like lastest one KGB head during Gorby term - Bakatin. He was high rank party functioneer and general.

Putin was young about 40 years old and more in 1991 he was already retired for 2 years and worked as deputy major of St.Peterburg.

That said, I have good feelings for the Russian people......just not their Communist government.==

Communist goverment was gone in 1991. Since that Russia is rulled by capitalist goverments:).

I'm very interested how so in America during information age when Internet is so easy for everyone there are still people who doesn't realize what happend during last 15 years?

Can you explain me why Soviet Union are gone for 15 years but still well-live in the minds of american public?:)

Well, I will answer your question.

Education and intelligence tests are not required before posting on Free Republic. In addition, many Americans' knowledge of Russia is derived solely from the cartoon-type information given to us by our stupid news channels and newspapers.

I hope this helps you understand. I am very glad your sailors were rescued!

They are based near Glasgow, Scotland. The Scorpio was flown out by the RAF from Prestwick airport, Scotland.

Russia Won’t Pay for US and British Assistance in Submarine Rescue

Created: 07.08.2005 05:10 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 05:10 MSK, 10 hours 10 minutes ago

MosNews.Com

British and American authorities will not be charging Russia for their assistance in the AS-28 mini-sub rescue effort. This aid is offered free of charge, according to trilateral agreements between the State Department, the Foreign Office and Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a source in Russian Navy Headquaters told the RIA Novosti information agency.

The source did stress, however, that this situation is different from the 2000-2001 international effort to raise the remnants of Kursk nuclear submarine from the Barents sea floor. Russia was served with an impressive bill for American assistance in Kursk lifting.

This happened because Kursk rescue was aided by civilian and commercial agents, who couldn’t be expected to do this work pro bono, RIA Novosti source explained. The situation happens to be different with AS-28 submarine rescue operation, where governments are involved.

My caring about their welfare comes mostly from the fact that we are all God's children.

There is no more pure, perfect and beautiful reason than that.

Putin I actually defended before in this forum if you remember right.

However, I believe the Russian military is full of old "block heads"; dudes that have been around before the discovery of fire and invention of the wheel. Many of them fit the bill and even today see the world divided into "us" and "them", despite the fact that we today have more mutual interests (economic, security) than lines of division.

Whether it's fighting the Islamists (Which they have a small issue with as well) or investments into their country, or the exploration of resources which they want to sell and others want to buy, our interests are becoming more parallel. But perceptions change slow.

If you look at the refusal for help with the Kursk. We offered, and they said “NO!”.

Look at how Russia is turning up the heat to get us out of the former Soviet Republics. Most of the issues we have there are generated by them behind the scene.

The Russians do not value life as much. If you look at how they deal with their casualties even in Chechnya in the 90s (The railcars). If you look at the hepatitis infection rates among their troops and the reason why they get this, you quickly realize that humans are an expendable commodity to their high command.

Look at how they control their media. The accountability is not there.

Life is a bit cheaper to them. Would they sacrifice people to save face? You say no, I say yes.

The United States also sent a remote controlled rescue vehicle and Japan dispatched specialist ships, but the British team got to the scene first.
