TIME TRAVEL

WELCOME TO THE CANTEEN’S MOST EXCELLENT ADVENTURE IN TV LAND.

The Canteen is about to embark on a journey back in time. Travel back in time to visit some vintage television shows. For the next few weeks we’ll travel back in time to discover what was on this new fangled thing called television.

If you don’t see your favorite show on this trip, don’t worry. Maybe you’ll see it on the next trip. If you’re not afraid.....bwhahahahaha

So, if you're brave enough, climb aboard, we’ll be taking a little trip back in time.

Come on, hop in, watch your step ...... Let me set my control for the 1900s.

Buckle up. Now don't be afraid....I know how to fly this thing.......Here we goooooooooo.......

WHOOOOOOSHHHHHHHH

Here we are - 1950s. Let me turn on the 1949 Emerson television to see what is on.

Do any of you remember these shows?

Hopalong Cassidy

6/24/1949 - 12/23/1951 NBC Black and White - 30 minutes

Hopalong Cassidy Cast

William Boyd as Hoppy

Edgar Buchanan as Red Connors

Horse: Topper

William Boyd had created the character of Hopalong Cassidy for "B" movie features and the first episodes were adaptations of those. Later the character of Red Connors was added (Edgar Buchanan) and from 1951 to 1952, Hopalong rode for another 52 episodes. That's how popular the character had become.

Passings - William Boyd died in 1972 of Parkinson's disease and heart failure and Edgar Buchanan in 1979 of a stroke

Gene Autry

7/23/1950 - 8/7/1956 CBS Black and White/Color - 30 minutes - 102 episodes

Produced by Flying A Productions at the Melody Ranch (Autry's own company)

Gene Autry Cast

Gene Autry with Pat Buttram

Horse: Champion

The singing cowboy, Gene Autry was a man of many talents and plenty of foresight. His early TV show was mostly an opportunity for him to sing a bit while he and Pat Buttram did silly things.

His success led him to see the future of TV Westerns and he formed his own production company, Flying A Productions, which also produced Annie Oakley, Range Rider, Buffalo Bill Jr. and others. His Melody Ranch was used as the "backlot" for many Western scenes in both television and film.

Passings - Gene Autry died in 1998 of lymphoma. Pat Buttram died in 1994 of kidney failure.

Ed Sullivan Show:

Toast of the Town

6/20/1948 - 9/1955 CBS 60 minutes Black and White

Howdy Doody

12/27/1947 - 9/30/1960 NBC

Black and White until 9/12/1955, then Color 30 minutes 2,543 total episodes

8/15/1948 -6/1/1956 - 5 days a week

1956 - 1960 - Saturdays

Original Title: Puppet Playhouse

Howdy Doody Cast

Bob Smith as Buffalo Bob Smith

Bob Keeshan as Clarabell

Bobby Nicholson as Clarabell /Cornelius Cobb

Lew Anderson as Clarabell

That's the end of the ride for today. Please watch your step on exiting the time machine. Now that I've turned on the shows, how about sharing something from your memory. Maybe, share a memory of the best episode for you. If you’ve never seen them, maybe you’ll be entertained just by hearing about them.

The Good Stuff for 5 August, 2005

The Word
"Men do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is."--Proverbs 6:30-35

The Quote
"September 11 for me was a wake up call. Do you know what I think the problem is? That a lot of the world woke up for a short time and then turned over and went back to sleep again." --British Prime Minister Tony Blair

The Joke

Religious History
1570 Spanish Jesuits led by Fray Batista Segura arrived in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia, for the purpose of converting the American Indians to Christianity. (Unfortunately, six months later, the entire group was massacred by the very Indians they had come to evangelize.)
1604 Baptism of John Eliot, American "apostle to the Indians." His evangelistic zeal led in 1649 to establishing the (missionary) Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England.
1656 Eight Quakers from England arrived in Boston and were immediately imprisoned by the local Puritan authorities. (The church-and-state amalgam of Puritanism looked upon non-ritual Quakerism with suspicion, regarding it as theologically apostate and politically subversive).
1869 Birth of Grant C. Tullar, American Methodist evangelist and music publisher. He is remembered today for composing the tune to the hymn, "Face to Face with Christ My Savior."
1961 The South American country of Bolivia adopted a new constitution that separated the powers of church and state.

Loo With A View Set To Debut

(AP) CANBERRA, Australia Scaling Australia’s highest mountain will soon become a more civilized climb after the construction of the country’s highest toilet.

Dubbed the “Loo with a View,” the all-weather toilet block is to be built into the wind-swept side of Mount Kosciuszko, 390 feet below its snowcapped peak in a New South Wales state national park.

“The engineering challenges are in trying to build something in such a remote location and at that elevation,” National Parks and Wildlife Service alpine area manager Andrew Harrigan said Thursday.

He described the toilet as “a bunker” built to withstand 93 mph winds and carved 20 feet into the mountain.

It will comprise three urinals and three unisex stalls—one with wheelchair access, he said.

The septic tank would have enough capacity to ensure that the toilet can last more than six months without a service when it is snowed in during winter. The toilet will also catch its own water.
It’s part of a campaign to prevent walkers and campers from digging latrines in the earth or snow.

Thought for the day :

Yes, that's my understanding. I've never done it myself, but it should be simple.

You should have a black binder with several booklets, one of which has a tear out sheet with the code. Good luck!
