I agree and believe they are already doing so in many other areas. There is something very HOT in this particular area and we are there to root it out.
Prayers for the all of the families that got this worst possible news yesterday and today.

For years this is the only way to get some income, so they sign up to get some money to feed their family.

The "real" soldiers with proper training and purpose, the Republican Guard and the Fedayen enjoys the support of large segments of the population for over 2 years.
They are happy to train the "would be" terrorists, the desperate youngsters who can not see much future there.
I guess if Bremer did not mess up the situation by outlawing them, this problem would had passed long ago with less casualty on both side.

There isn't a single substantiated fact in anything you've said. The "fly-trap" scenario you've described is nothing more than a lame attempt to explain (and provide a retroactive justification) how the U.S. could possibly find itself fighting a guerrilla war and incurring heavy casualties more than two years after "major combat operations" supposedly end. You will not find a single U.S. military source that ever used this rationale before the war began, mainly for two reasons: 1) the war wasn't supposed to last this long, and 2) they never expected to find so many foreign forces involved in Iraq.
the reason for going in to Iraq originally was not as a nation-building exercise, it was to remove a terorist-training and coddling regime that was demonstrating the impotence of the West against jihad. The purpose was to remove a threat to America that was a matter of when, not if.
We have completed that mission and now are in the process of rebuilding the country into something that will not become another threat in ten years.
Things that are worthwhile often take sacrifice and time to accomplish.
And you can't call someone "delusional" and qualify it "with all due respect". It is one or the other. And Jeff is the one who is realistic regarding Iraq.
Also, if you happen to look at a map of the Mideast with all its turmoil and said "where is the best geographic place to have troops?", you would point to Iraq.
We certainly do live in interesting times.

14 Marines dead today. Why? Who are they fighting over there? Have our guys gotten any 'kills' in the past 3 months? Won any 'battles'? Stopped any 'terrorists' from making it over here? (Yes, I'm developing quite the cynical view of the 'war' these days. All the placating platitudes aren't working for me anymore.)
I hope everyone will remember in their prayers these Marines and their families.
They paid the ultimate price.
May they all rest in peace.

Yah, this is what ticks me off. Looks like Haji waited until he saw all our guys bunched up into one vehicle. Sounds like a drive up bomb to me. But it could have been an roadside van bomb. It's got to be a big one to completely take out the Amphib vehicle. That far in, the Corps should be using Strykers and Bradleys. Why they are using Amphtraks I'll never know. Very thin skin, iirc.

I hate that there are people who will rejoice to this news. I hope and pray that there will be justice for them, in this life or the next.
Iraq in the long term view is a battle in the War against Radical Islamicism. That war was always expected to take a long time, the length of any particular battle is fairly irrelevant. We are involved in battles with Syrians, Iranians, Saudis, and Pakistanis, and more in Iraq. Because we are fighting them in Iraq now, those eventual battles will be easier and may require less actual warfare when they are fought because their most committed fighters lie dead in Iraq.

This is a war, we can't control how the enemy chooses to fight back. They could have stayed hidden in their home countries and waited till we left a free stable Iraq before choosing to go in and take over in five years. THe fact that they have chosen to take a strong position in a sure to lose Iraq battle is theirs to make.
