Schmidt Wins 08/02 11:05 PM

The local affiliate Fox 19 has just called the race for Jean Schmidt over Paul Hackett 52 to 48 percent.

Many thanks to all The Buzz readers who helped keep all of us on breaking news side of this.

And thanks to everyone who kept reading late tonight as well.

The Channel 9 affiliate has called the race as well.

Do you have links that show what unit Haccket was with and what he did?

I could easily come up with photos that make it look like I was in the thick of things, too.

Odd that his campaign site doesn't say what unit he was in.

I doubt that either of these fine citizens ever did, but they fit the bill. *^)

Where are the asylums when you need them?

In Russia, those two would be prime candidates for being recipients of the imposed Siberian Homestead Act.

I have it around somewhere, but he wasn't in a combat unit or role, he was a civil affairs officer.

I've come around to the M. Savage point of view that liberalism is a mental disorder.

I've never seen these types of pathetic lunatics at GOP rallies.

Yes it is. It's delusional, irrational and leads to utter dispair as witnessed by those two nuts.

The end result of postmodernist rejection of absolute truth is nihilism, because when you have no truth to hold to except your present feelings, which are constantly in flux, it's like having your feet planted firmly in mid-air.

LOL, heck, I've been threatened by kooks like that at GOP rallies. At a Bush Rally last fall, two came up to myself and a few of my friends, drunk, carrying placards on wooden stakes, woth one shouting at me about what he would to me do with that wooden stake. 4 of our cities finest in blue were 15 yards away, two of whom I know well. I calmly called them over and had those two charged with communicating a threat.

Then they went ballistic about their 1st ammendment rights being denied. LOL

They went to jail anyway and were convicted.

What are the real (non-fraud) totals? 62-38?

That's part of it. The big story of how WELL the WOT is going is totally ignored in the media and in the public. Why? Because success is so quiet. In a way this election is like a mid-term, where the electorate gives some vent to discontents they would not suffer venting -- that they would ignore for more important issues -- during major elections.

We just moved from Northern Kentucky to Northeast Ohio, land of liberals. I saw Hacketts TV spot and I thought he was a republican. Not until I saw the REAL republican spot did I realise I'd been had.

Do you really think you're going to convince anyone of anything with those Dr. Dean talking points?

It was on Rush. This 'Iraq veteran' was really just a pen pusher in an office.

Rob Portman held this seat until Bush named him US Trade Representative. The district covers Cincinnati and southwestern Ohio, very conservative area. Jean Schmidt was not a great candidate for our side, she is considered a RINO by many, as well as an ally of Repub Gov Bob Taft whom currently enjoys a 19% approval rating due to scandals and the fact he raised taxes. Her opponent fought in the Iraqi war, and basically ran as a Repub.

It is understandable why the race was as close as it was. The Dems were able to turn out more of their voters in a race with low voter turnout.

In 2004, Bush beat Kerry in Warren County 68,037 to 26,044 (Schmidt beat Hackett 7,556 to 5,420); in Hamilton Bush beat Kerry 222,616 to 199,679 (S beat H 25,011 to 23,597); in Clermont Bush beat Kerry 62,949 to 25,887 (S beat H 17,320 to 12,439); in Brown Bush beat Kerry 12,647 to 7,140 (H beat S 3,950 to 3,100); in Adams Bush beat Kerry 7,653 to 4,281 (H beat S 2,101 to 1,911); in Scioto Bush beat Kerry 18,259 to 16,827 (H beat S 4,925 to 2,638); and in Pike Bush beat Kerry 6,520 to 5,989 (H beat S 2,659 to 1,559).

The Dems were able to get a higher percentage of turnout than the Reps, which made the race closer than it should have been. The involvement of Carville, Daschle, and the national MSM helped to energize the Dem base. It would be interesting to see how much money was spent on both sides. I wouldn't read too much into the results of a special election held in August. A win is a win.

>Couldn't stay up to watch the end of this very tight race, but thanks to the Ohio Republicans who bothered to show up yesterday and to Rush, who undoubtedly helped get some people to go to the polls with his excellent commentary yesterday. Let this be a lesson for "solid Republican" congressional districts next year. Only Democrats can manufacture votes.<

Excellent and well said. I heard Rush's commentary on this yesterday as well and, per usual, Rush hits it! I recently moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, (just next door to district 2), and was anxious to hear the results. Rush's 17 years observing the dems helped calm me over the 2004 election and helped me see what the dems are up to during every election. I was truly worried that our CIC was in danger of losing his residence.
