NASA realizes debris that fell of external fuel tank yesterday came close to causing irrepairable damage to shuttle now in orbit.
Fleet GROUNDED. More later
Chances to return to flight again, no better than 50/50.
Maybe the astromers that have been pushing the HST fix so hard will volunteer for a suicide repair mission and die in glory on re-entry.
Or maybe not.
Sorry to see the incredible HST go, but I think this is the very last Shuttle mission. I pray this astronaut group makes it home OK.
There are horror stories about PC at NASA. Stuff like not being allowed to have a simple Christmas (can I say that?) ornament on your desk.
My son applied for a NASA summer thing a few years ago. Their were about 6 interviewers since they had a lot of applicants. Interviewers were black, women, wheelchair-bound, etc. In total, one white male.
My blond son didn't stand a chance. Kid from his school with lower grades got the nod since his name sounded Hispanic. After all, we don't want the best. We want to give opportunities.
Given the money spent to return to flight, it is hard to see how one cent more will be spent on the problem. I agree, RIP shuttle, the CEV now pushes to center stage.
Again, sell it to China. That's how we handle our technology problems these days.
China is probably within ten years of a manned moon landing. They know it can be done, and that is pretty much all they need to know. It is possible the USA can get back to the moon by then, but there is apparently no sense of urgency at this time.
White = absence of color,
Black = presence of all colors.
That = the reflectivity thing.
"We should get our goal in building a new space ship and perhaps land to Mars before the Chi-Coms."
We already have that goal,as outlined by President Bush. It's a good read.

just pray they can get this crew home, then NASA should be disbanded.
I heard the mission manager on the radio coming home (forget his name, starts with a P I think) - he should be fired immediately, saying that the current Discovery flight was always viewed as a "test flight". My a**, fire this idiot.
Too bad he didn't mention the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty. His Committee on Moon, Mars and Beyond report does.
NASA - "We don't know what we're doing and we prove it every day."
I think Griffen (the new NASA manager) has passed out what appears to be a final exam for the Shuttle Program and it appears to have failed the test. Maybe things will turn around and NASA won't be disbanded entirely.
I was just being PC, but it depends upon whether we are talking about light or surfaces.
With light, white CAN be composed of all the colors of the spectrum. (It can also be composed of a smaller portion of the spectrum such as RGB.) Hence, black would be the absence of any color (or light).
But with pigments, white is the apparent absence of color and black can be made by mixing several colors of pigment. Then, of course, what we see reflected is light. So the colors of the pigments are determined by what they absorb and what they reflect.
So it can go either way.
But, since "white" people are nowhere near white, it is totally stupid to call them white. If I went into a paint store and scanned my skin and bought some paint, the paint would be a lovely tan in the winter and a dark tan in the summer. Therefore, I am a person of color, too. In fact, I use to teach in a school where there was 1 white girl and 1000 "black" kids, none of whom were really black. (She was the valedictorian.) I was darker than about 1 in 10 "black" kids when I came back from summer vacation.
I'm for manned space flight. And I want the U.S. dominant within that field.
< didn't read the article, /just sayin>
Officials are still working to determine just how severe the damage is. It appears a small piece of the tile was chipped-away by a falling piece of insulation foam from the orbiter's external fuel tank. NASA engineers say now it's a matter of determining if that piece was a "chip" or a "chunk".
xxxxxxxxxxx
this discussion is dumb. Bill Clinton and has EPA friends caused this problem. Don't believe me. Just check the records back in 1995 or 97. The green tree huggers were worried that the foam would not be bio degradable on the center fuel tank. So, a change was made in the compound of the insulation on the tank. That is whay the eariler foam came loose and the foam came loose this time.
Check it out.
What I want to know is if the Montreal Protocol is the real reason the Shuttle has been grounded.
at the rate at which china is developing their technology industry (as american companies ship our industry to them), I am not surprised.
I thought it was the Saturn 5? 7 million pounds at liftoff, 7.5 million pounds of thrust. Liftoffs were slow, because it had to burn off some fuel to leave the pad!
place the blame on Nixon for Apollo
