Just breaking now on Sky.
Oh we've got plenty but thanks to the "new media" they no longer can make their "clueless" claims without being challenged.
That's the first thing I said to my husband when I heard it on the radio this morning.
His reply, "Well I guess they changed that rule."
Later I read they were plainclothes policemen.
It sounds like SAS or someone following SAS doctrine for dealing with bombers. If you read the stories of the IRA guys the SAS got in Gibraltar, it's the same MO. No messing about, just empty a gun into chummy's torso at point blank.
Geez, pay attention, will ya? For the past 2 weeks it has been said over and over that Brits use the term "asian" to describe people from the sub-continent, that INCLUDES Pakistan, as well as orientals. And it was a witness, not Foxnews, that originally used the term.
I didn't know that. I learned something new. I need to learn as much of the British "language" as I can.

You can be assured that the thoughts and prayers of the vast majority here are focused on supporting your countrymen during this difficult time.
Ignor the critical asswipes.....and simply stay focused on the game at hand -- protecting the innocent and killing the bastards..
The swamp becomes less dangerous, as one kills the snakes and alligators.... Our clearing operation hasn't really started yet...
You Brits will show the world, the correct way to deal with these resident cockroaches...
Good show, mate. Take no un-necessary prisoners..

Unlike us the Brits do not arm every would-be Rambo flatfoot with enough kit to take down the Pentagon. The reserve that for trained and qualified personnel who have a real target. Don't knock it. It actually works and they save themselves billions a year in liability costs for shooting eight-year olds who eat French fries on the metro.
What really ought to amaze you is the speed with which the Brits figured out who perteptrated the last bombing. Our side would still be arguing about whether they want filled or sugarless.

I don't think the bobbies carry guns in general, but apparently more and more British police do--undercover officers, their version of SWAT teams, etc. The criminals over there are increasing their firepower drastically despite the draconian gun bans, and the police have to compensate. The only ones left defenseless are the law-abiding citizens.

Ivan, please know that thoughts and prayers for Britain are strong and constant in these difficult days. Thank God the police caught this one...it is horrifying to think where he may have targeted if they hadn't got him.
If this was an SAS operation, my first thought is "good." Deal with them with the utmost in prejudice.
All things considered, including the eventual awakening of liberals to the terrorist threat (they want to kill liberals too), killing everybody involved in terrorism is the ONLY way to stop it; so, involvement of the SAS is a necessity.
My first thought exactly. Also sounds reminiscent of the operation at the Iranian embassy.
I'm off to work. Take care, man. And be safe.
My brother-in-law is a Brit. Served in RAF, then served in, and retired out of USAF after they moved back to America. My nephew was born there, and they have family in London. Our hearts and prayers are with you.
Well, hopefully this ROPer was strapped up, and we won't have to find out.
"I thought the cops in England weren't allowed to carry guns?"
They apparently are against enemy terrorist combatants. 'bout time!
Listening to the news- the policy seems to be if the person is deemed to be an immediate threat to the police and/or civilians they can take him out.
Just to speculate a bit here. I see two scenarios. What the eye-witness described is classic SAS doctrine for dealing with someone who might be holding a bomb trigger. That means either actual SAS or someone who was trained by them in CQB techniques, like for example say the Anti-Terrorist squad.
Either, this guy was spotted acting suspiciously at random, or more likely given the technique used by the "plain clothes" guy, knock him down and empty the clip into him, it seems more likely they'd flushed one of yesterday's fugitive bombers and were chasing him. The way he was killed sounds like specialist anti-terrorist units with SAS CQB doctrine.
Of course if it was the SAS they probably won't admit to it.

POLICE have briefly thrown a security cordon around a mosque in east London, a day after four attempted bombings in the British capital, BBC News 24 television reported. The East London Mosque on Whitechapel Road, one of the biggest and most modern in the capital, was surrounded by police officers, some of whom were armed, a woman at the scene told the news channel by telephone.
Not long afterwards, BBC reported the police had been stood down.
"There was a bomb threat at the East London mosque and there was a cordon," a police officer said at the scene told Reuters.
"It's all cleared, that's it."
