It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.
Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.
The women and children all Muslims have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.
Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.
But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...
Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

No fool, try and keep up with the rest of the "western" world knows and sees regarding the abuses middle east women endure week after week.
I realize the full length garments keep the body cooled off in the desert. Too bad it doesn't keep the mid eastern males mental and physical cruelty towards it female population COOLED OFF...Duh
Talibany males suck camel dung. Somebody had to say it.
Actually, I mostly think peaceful European countries should never import 7th-century women-hating death cults onto their territory.
The only sentence on payment is this, and it does not read like a private rental of a facility at all:
"Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee."
It reads like a minimal user fee of a public facility. Considering the special requirements why are they paying the same fee? And is this fee subsidized by the government or does it cover all expenses? Is the fee per person or for a group? Not clear. If per person, and other persons are excluded, there is a problem right there.
From the Seattle Department of Park and Recreation:
"Fees and charges are necessary to provide financial support to the Department of Parks and Recreation (the Department) for the operation and maintenance of programs, facilities and park grounds. The revenue generated by these fees constitutes only a portion of funds required for operating and maintaining the Park System. All fees collected from park and recreation activities and concessions are used exclusively for the Park System, as these funds are deposited in the Park and Recreation Fund, not the City General Fund.
Fees and charges are proposed each year by the Department as a part of the annual budget process. Both the Mayor and City Council review and, by ordinance, authorize the Department to collect these fees and charges

What's next, segregated sections for women in eateries and other public places?
Aah, some common sense at post 8. I was beginning to worry. (and no, I didn't read yours yet, TG)
Personally, I don't find anything nice at all about oppression.
Exactly! Where are Helen Gurley Brown, Gloria Steinem et al? They burned bras, (which some of us need) but no burning of the burka?
This oppression should not be allowed in our country. And all of those who think it's so "modest" and great should be forced to wear the damn get ups themselves.

This is an open and shut case of employment discrimination based on gender.
So would I. But are there enough people who agree with us? Or would political correctness rule the day?
Quote "What you have here is the beginning social process of having Americans accept the law of sharia and its associated regime of purda. If Muslims want to observe their social laws, they need to do it in their own private swimming pools."
BUMP! Unquote
I need to add that I would be looking at the "Special Bathing Arrangements" very differently if the camel donkers hadn't killed 3000 innocent Americans in New York,
several hundred in the Pentagon, and several hundreds of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Can yo imagine Americans allowing Japanese to rent
restaurants as groups durinig WWII so they could have the occassional traditional meal of Sashimi and Rice. Those who agree with purdah style bathing to accomodate these people are liberal apologist wonks. They do not understand the true social context: " Muslims Conquering the West" by using liberals with bleedng heart bathing suits against our own society. Those who died and troops who have
sacrificed for us deserve better!
F___K Dat!
Yes, it is. We rent it and we say who works and who doesn't.
Grow up. GEEZ!
Meanwhile, the Feminazi's won't rest until Augusta National Golf Club allows women members. Since I assume that you also support seperate clubs for men, I won't get on your case for belonging to an all-female helath club. But I really do think that the cows from Now ought to picket your gym and all others like it.
There is that amazing contradiction between "multiculturalism" and "feminism."
Bottom line is we are dealing with morons from primitive Arab nations. In the early 19th century American woman covered themselves up when bathing at beaches and ponds. But no where near as much as the silly Muslim women. Who have no beauty to be modest about. Only Muslim men think nasty lecherous thoughts about Muslim women. No one else wants to know these 7th century primitives.
In essense, I agree with you wholeheartedly - but you are missing the point on this one.
It is a bad example given the pre existing rules of the pool.
a good example would be my city's idiot mayor giving a speech at a new mosque saying how "wonderful" it s to have cultural diversity in Boston, and then a few months later having the place investigated for terroristic teachings.
Whether or not a few "shy" (for lack of a better term) women want to take a dip in a rented pool in Seattle is not my concern. What should worry about is what their husbands and sons are talking about in their mosque.
I agree there is a double standard, but then again, if you can make a buck by catering to female insecurity by opening a WO gym, more power to you.
