It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.
Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.
The women and children — all Muslims — have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.
Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.
But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...
Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

the rental agreement in a public facility can specify what type of clothing, or the inclusion of male lifeguards.
The rental agreement for private use is a contract with both parties finalizing the terms. If you don't like it, then take it to City Hall. Good luck.
The issue is private use vs public use and you want to mix public dictates into the terms for private use - and you call me arrogant?

This would serve everyone, wouldn't it? And Muslim men who had a problem with all this, could spend the money like everybody else and rent the pool when THEY want to use it.

It's a public facility, therefore, dictating how it is used is within the scope of the public. If I rent something to you, I am within my rights to dictate what you can and cannot do with such thing. If you don't like it don't rent it.

Obviously, the private use guidelines of the public facility in question doesn't meet with your approval. As I said before, tough 5hit. If you don't like the private use guidelines then take it to City Hall. It's a public facility, therefore, dictating how it is used is within the scope of the public.

Umm, millions survive it ..miserably. As the women in the middle east survive beatings, oppression, honor dismemberment, etc. I guess that's okay with you since YOU and the middle east men don't ever have to experience the degradation, objectification and abuse the mid east women do.

That sort of remark no doubt was said about the Jews when they were locked up in train cargo containers on the way to the oven camps during WWII. It was probably hot, yet somehow some survived it.

This is BS. Why should Muslims demand segregated swimming at public pools? Let them open their own private swimming clubs like everyone else who wants special accommodations.
I'm an Orthodox Jew -- we also require segregated pools, which is why the local JCC has hours for men only, hours for women only, and hours for coed.

Their coverings actually protect them from the sun a lot better than short shorts and tank tops. They aren't being tortured. I'm not saying I agree with the prudishness, I am saying that it is a stretch to imply the women must be suffering from the heat, and that this is another example of how evil Muslim men are.
