Without that blackmail, there wouldn't have been the 3/4 of the states needed to enact the amendments. I don't disagree but they are there and it will take a constitutional convention to get rid of them.

Perhaps you missed the qualifier "IF"

I really could not make up my mind on Gonzales. I found enough that worried me, but then some good explanations for SOME of the stuff that did.
But, that would have upset me if he picked Gonzeles.

You can have my honest opinion any time.
To: Onelifetogive
Absolutely - you got that right!
I don't have a good feeling at all about Pres. Bush on this..... ever since O'Conner's retirement announcement, Bush has been backpedaling on his campaign pledge, and the only group that he has chosen to publicly berate and chastise, is the conservative majority base that elected and re-elected him. I hope I'm wrong.... but conservatives have been on the short end of stick in every legislative or judicial battle ever since the Nov 2, 2004 election. Bush is not a principled conservative, he's at best a closet moderate who's more interested in appeasing the Rino's & the RATS!

Well, that's the point RW. We don't want any "if's" this time. "If's" have given us Souter, Stevens and the recently departed for Planet Penumbra Justice Anthony Kennedy.
No if's this time. Rock ribbed conservative jurist with an apellate record. We have the votes, they don't.

Edith Jones is the only one appointed by President Reagan. Many conservatives support her. Pragmatic conservatives believe Edith Jones is too conservative and "too controversial" and favor Edith Clement.

But Clement is still a conservative accepted for most of us, I hope so.

The 13th amendment abolished Slavery.

I know I am off topic. I also know the SC doesn't really affect this issue right now. I made a comment to someone earlier regarding Vicente Fox and that's how I got on this subject.
To: jveritas
I can't get excited about Edith Clement's opinions. But she is far better than many the President could have named.

And if the Ted Kennedys of the world have their way, the 16th amendment will reinstate it.

Yeah I saw that I meant the 14th as I said just before the typo.

Specter says he was summoned to the White House tonight Thanks for the clarification. Bush was going to a major social event tonight, so it must have been a late meeting. Sort of unusual for Mr. "in bed by nine".

One possible nominee that no one has thought of until now... the man behind the golden EIB microphone, El Rushbo, Rush Limbaugh... Rush can do his show live from the Supreme Court chambers 5 days a week and still take days off here and there to play in his favorite pro-am golf tournaments. Maybe Sean Hannity could stand in for him on decisions that come up when he is away... just like old times. ;)

It's amusing. Specter was hotly controversial when in Philly. I wasn't really paying attention to local politics then, but it seemed like every day somebody or other was saying kind of loudly, "That #$%$ Specter!"

LOL, a blue collar guy telling Scalia he's wrong.
There weren't many white collar Italians from Scalia's Queens neighborhood in the 40s and 50s.
