Interesting--the WV sat forecast point overlay is labeled Cat 3 now.

Assuming she stays on the same track, she will go over about ~150 miles of the Yucatan. At 18mph, it will take 8.33 hours to cross.

It's about 200 miles to that point now, so... about 11.5 hours till she hits the GOM.

Is anybody besides me shocked at the stupid people down in Cancun that the TV has been showing? The ones who keep saying "We didn't know a storm was coming?"

The numbers correspond to the direction on a compass. 295 is a hair N of WNW.

I saw a tourist sitting in the lobby of a hotel, that said, "I'm sitting right here by the window so I can see the hurricane. I've never seen one before." Hee-Hee-Hee

I think she's going to see more than she bargained for.

The ones who keep saying "We didn't know a storm was coming?"

One word: tequila

They say the direction now is 295/16 (wnw).

Is there a link that shows the direction of those numbers? I don't have a clue what search words to use or I'd google it. Thanks.

I don't have a link, but 295/16 means that Emily is moving at a heading of 295 degrees at 16 mph.

Headings are compass directions: due north is 0 degrees; due east is 90, due south is 180, due west is 270, and due north is 360, whereupon you reset to 0.

NW would be 270 + 45 = 315. WNW would be halfway between due west and NW, or 292.5. So the direction given, 295, approximates WNW.

Not me. From what I've heard about Cancun, most of the people who go down there fall into two categories.

1. They don't pay attention to the news at all.

2. They are otherwise too preoccupied with their activities to notice anything.

Since the people who do pay attention left, all you have are these groups.

Just imagine if you were related to her and saw her on the news saying that.

If you were flying from the United States, what IS the last thing you do before you go out the door?

That is pretty foolish..

As others have stated, I would guess there are many in Cancun who have never watched a day of news in their life. ;-) Several of my friends went there for Spring Break during college, and their stories included very little about anything other than partying.

Last time I was there, the only TV channel in English was CNN. Then you get to normal oblivion from the fun in the sun and rum and tequila. (This is assuming they had some kind of snap to begin with.)

Looking at supplemental recon, the plane found winds of 161mph in the NE quad recently... appears she is strengthening.

These are people who flew to Cancun AFTER Emily became a hurricane -- like within the last day or so!
