Hurricane Dennis heading toward the Gulf of Mexico
We were discussing how the media was about to make that the top slogan for the next several days earlier on the Weather Forum OT section... I had to make a graphic (with sat shot from Ivan). The storm is obviously not a joking matter, but I cringe at the idea of hearing this phrase over and over again the next few days.

They prop all those vintage 1950's cars and trucks against the buildings. They built vehicles to last back then.
ROFLMAO!
If your neighbor has a generator and is making ice cream outside, deadly gunfights can occur.
Outstanding!

This image also gives estimated windspeeds. From
This heat will do strange things to a man's logic.
Do you know it was 73° in New Orleans at this time yesterday?
Post Cindy- which didn't really follow the forecasts and was a respectable little windstorm after all- the temp here in Metairie was 78degrees at NOON! In JULY! Unheard of!
Good thing for the people without power!
I'm not thinking about Dennis until/unless I have to. It's just disgusting thinking that no where else in the country are people thinking about losing all they have, and running for their lives by the weekend.
This is no way to live-not worth the misery.
All the kids in my family are told to GET OUT and live a better life away from hurricanes and panic for 6 months of the year.
Yeh, BUT is Dennis a "posse hunter?"
Is there a web-site to look at hurricane paths from like the last 10 years by month or something?
IE. If I wanted to see what was the average path of hurricanes during the month of August for the past 10 years..
If they ain't around hurricanes, they're buried in snow for sixth months of the year, or bracing for "the big" earthquake at any time. It's six of one, half dozen the other.
There is nowhere you can move and escape the weather. At least with hurricanes we have plenty of warning.
Here is one going back to 1851:
The horrible thing is when you can remember the exact same thing from 7 years earlier; my modest proposal is to shoot EVERYONE who uses "Dennis the Menace", "My Bonnie Lies O'er the Ocean" etc. etc. for any tropical system in any context (board post, newspaper headline, etc.)
I don't recall hearing any other place EVACUATING because of weather. Snowstorms, tornadoes--happen every year, but whole cities are not in a panic to escape. Mayors don't get on tv telling you about body bags for everyone.
Oh no-it's different here, with hurricanes.
I just will NEVER understand why the most civilized country in the world, with the strongest housing, infrastructure, etc is WORSE off in hurricanes( according to officials) than Cuba and third world countries.
I was a teen during Betsy. Direct hit here. VERY impressive. But there was NO 'run for your life' panic three days before landfall. We had less than 12 hours notice. They were so sure it was going to the Gulf Coast- then, SURPRISE!, it was coming here.
All we were told to do was board our windows, get supplies and hunker down. NO- there's definitely a level of panic now that we didn't have when I grew up. Death and destruction isn't just anticipated- it's anticipated with an almost manic glee.
Ha! blam will love that SORT OF!
