Kerry's Vietnam (Boston Globe painted into a Corner)
Boston Glob ^ | 6/10/05 | GLOBE EDITORIAL

DESPITE THE continuing gripes of his critics, records released this week show that Senator John Kerry served honorably in Vietnam. The documents should put to rest claims that Kerry misrepresented his military record in the presidential race. But Kerry's failure to respond to the smear campaign launched against him last summer lent credibility to its real objective: to impugn his equally honorable opposition to the war.

John O'Neill, a Houston lawyer and Kerry's adversary on the war since 1971, acknowledged as much in a telephone interview Wednesday. ''We produced seven commercials," he said of his anti-Kerry group, now called Swift Vets and POWs for Truth. ''Only one dealt with Vietnam activities." O'Neill was incensed by Kerry's memorable testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1971, in which the young veteran, clad in a combat shirt, criticized the war.

Kerry has said that he may have used a poor choice of words when he cited other veterans' reports of atrocities as being ''in a fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan." But his basic analysis was sound: Vietnamese and Americans were dying needlessly because the war was a mistake, and US policymakers allowed it to continue even though they were aware that their strategy for victory was failing.

Thanks, I saw the article and said pretty much the same thing on the FR thread discussing it.

It's unsettling that ex-Navy JAG Sullivan is quoted as saying so many things that are not exactly accurate re the form, etc.

And he is really the only person keeping the dishonorable discharge alive. And he was also the person who started the claim back when.

Believe me, I'd love nothing more than for it to be true. It certainly would have been more than just. But it just is hard to believe it would have happened and been covered up.

Remember, Kerry went into politics immediately after leaving the service. He used it as an excuse for his premature separation--to run for Congress.

It is just preposterous to think he would have thought he could have gotten away with this then--or any time subsquently, when he was already such a high target politician. It's actually kinda crazy, if you think about it objectively.

It undermines the great evidence put forward by the Swiftees and others to harp on these clearly ludicrous theories--in my opinion.

The fun will start if/when he runs in '08; if he shows any strength at all you can bet his Dem primary opponents will raise these issues either directly or via plants and leaks. Should be most entertaining !

Deleted/Undeleted refers to the SPD/SPN's. DD214's were originally issued with a SPN. This was a code designation that essentially categorized you & the reason for seperation, among other things.
employers got their hands on the code book, and were able to decipher the codes. http://www.utahvva.org/documents/spn%20codes_num.htm
I believe the Feds/DOD got sued and were required to redact that section of the DD214.

Re: Kerry & his possible discharge clean-up. While the discharge was strangely given under the Carter administration, I happen to agree with you on this one. There is no evidence that Kerry could have/should have been covered under Cater's amnesty.
We pretty much sliced & diced it up on the swift vet forums and couldn't make it stick.

It would be interesting to know if Kerry had SPD/SPN codes on his DD-214

"There are MANY of us, that won't and can't rest -- until the lying bastards that slandered our lost brothers, are PUBLICLY exposed and harangued until their dying day...."

I can't agree with you more... it's my right to slam F'ing Kerry as much as I want. I don't want him to ever forget.

Check this out - from Meet the Press, Jan 30, 2005:
"
MR. RUSSERT: And you have a hat that the CIA agent gave you?

SEN. KERRY: I still have the hat that he gave me, and I hope the guy would come out of the woodwork and say, "I'm the guy who went up with John Kerry. We delivered weapons to the Khmer Rouge on the coastline of Cambodia." We went out of Ha Tien, which is right in Vietnam. We went north up into the border. And I have some photographs of that, and that's what we did. So, you know, the two were jumbled together, but we were on the Cambodian border on Christmas Eve, absolutely.
"
[transcript at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6886726/]

Can somebody out there in FReeper Land tell me why Kerry would be delivering weapons to the Khmer Rouge?

I tried to understand by visiting this site: http://www.edwebproject.org/sideshow/history/coldwar.html, but I am still stumped. Any help?

Glad we're on the same laugh track!

We are alone sometimes.

Too bad others can't join in.

If it were true...
the Khmer Rouge were a rag-tag bunch prior to 1970...mostly backed by the NVA & VC.
Why Kerry would make that statement ? He thinks we're idiots.

here's something funny...from last august, "You realize that every cloth pattern is copyrighted and that hat could probably be made of cloth copyrighted in 1979 0r 1986 or some such irrelavent day, thus proving yet another lie?"

oh, never mind...I see it in the story, "clad in a combat shirt" while testifying... he had the poor taste to show up in Senate proceedings wearing jeans and a 'combat' shirt.

his final words that day: "And so when thirty years from now our brothers go down the street without a leg, without an arm, or a face, and small boys ask why, we will be able to say "Vietnam" and not mean a desert, not a filthy obscene memory, but mean instead where America finally turned and where soldiers like us helped it in the turning."

Anyone who believes what Kerry's kneepad-wearing, NYT-owned, hometown newspaper said about a document release, without an actual complete publication of *the* signed 180 and the released documents (pdfs on a web page, originals available for view), probably doesn't have the critical thinking skills to "know" much of anything.

That's my thought, as well.

They both show up recently, and their primary posting history is to (poorly) defend Kerry.

And they want us to think they are legitimate FReepers?

Riiiiiight.

For his anti-American anti-war activities and for meeting in secret with the communist Vietnames in Paris in 1970, Hanoi John Kerry deserves nothing less than a tobacco facial just like his soulmate Hanoi Jane Fonda. Piss on both of these traitors.

Love,
Jarhead

*Right* *there* is the fundamental difference between criticisms of Bush's service, and criticism of Kerry's.

The core of those criticizing Bush's TANG service, are not former military, but are political operatives.

The core of those critizing Kerry are those who served alongside him.

This is a fundamental, telling difference, and should be highlighted more than it is.

BTW, I sent more money to the Swiftvets in the last election, than I did the Bush campaign. I continue to think this was a good decision, and hope we will all continue to press for and get the full disclosure from Kerry that the American people deserve.

And thank you for serving.
