Two Lodi men arrested for suspected al Qaeda ties (Ca)

Federal officials believe they have broken up an al Qaeda terror cell operating in Lodi and have arrested two men and detained two others as part of a wide-ranging investigation, authorities said Tuesday. One of the men arrested, 22-year-old Hamid Hayat, is accused in a federal criminal complaint of training in an al Qaeda camp in Pakistan to learn “how to kill Americans” and then lying to FBI agents about it. His training included explosives and weapons instruction and using photographs of President Bush as targets, court documents indicate.

Where was that community that started us on the Jihad in America thingie? I think Clovis_Skeptic posted the first article as I remember.

I am writing to voice my concern about some troubling correlative though not necessarily causal facts. Is anyone else familiar with the Rancho Seco Nuclear power plant? It was taken offline in June 1989 but the clean up process is ongoing and not expected to be complete until 2030 (see attached pdf http://www.nrc.gov/materials/decommissioning/ml041210099.pdf).

When my father was working at Rancho Seco he lived in - you guessed it - Lodi. So did many of the PG&E and Bechtel contractors working at Rancho Seco. I would not be surprised if many of the clean up crews now working at Rancho Seco live there too.

The Class B and C radioactive waste was scheduled for shipment to Envirocare for disposal beginning in 2004. Is it more than a coincidence that an Al Queda cell has been captured in Lodi? Freepers, please consider using our collective investigative skills and voices to see if this angle has any validity.

I keep going back to that quote from the Land Whale where he said, "There is no terrorist threat in this country. This is a lie. This is the biggest lie we've been told." I'm sure all that we will hear from him is silence on this incident, or that it was Ashcroft's fault.

I'm in agreement. We moved here 14 years ago and are amazed at the growth...not all of it is good. Very little, actually.

Interesting.

I know the individual in charge of the 'breakdown' of Rancho Seco. I'll see him Sunday morning...will ask about that.

I'm not too familiar with Lodi itself, but how close is the California Aqueduct to town? Since that aqueduct provides water for the San Joaquin valley, that might seem like a potential target of these creeps. I'll be interested to hear about the Rancho Seco info too.

I'm honestly a little dismayed that FReepers seem more concerned with a confirmation hearing or the stupid Jacko trial than this story. Usually we are on top of such threats compared to most people, but if even WE are distracted by this other stuff...well, it makes me concerned that we are getting too complacent in this country.

Rancho Seco is very close to Lodi. So are a lot of critical assets.

I don't have the military or intelligence background that some of our posters have, so I don't often comment. I guess I'm guilty of just reading and carrying on too.

I bet there are more comments on the "Jacko Verdict Thread" than that entire list.

Are we surprised? It was just a matter of time, and we'll probably soon find it's just the tip of the iceberg. The map identifying Islamic terrorist locations in the US is scary. Interesting that it broke in California. Remember the Patty Hurst situation? What was the name of the syndrome, named after a Swedish psychologist, where a hostage comes to bond and relate to his/her captors?

Do they grow stuff in Lodi? I thought it was just a convenience store/gas stop on the road to Kirkwood. Now I find out those turban wearing 7-11 clerks are really sleeper terrorists?!

Stockholm syndrome. In this case it might be renamed "Stockton Syndrome" (Stockton CA is just south of Lodi).

The guys in turbans in these parts are Sikhs. Nice people, socially conservative, tend to be Republican.

Just a follow-up, this guy Khan was the one the caller mentioned:

Two other men were arrested in Lodi for violating terms of their visas, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Dean Boyd.

The men have been identified as Muhammad Adil Khan -- an imam at Farooqia Islamic Center -- and Shabbir Ahmed, who is also an imam in Lodi, an administration source said.
