Watched the Discovery Channel show on the Greatest American countdown? You get to vote who you feel is the greatest American. The votes were web paged at aol.com./greatestamerican. It only takes a few readings of the bio's to see where they are going. Matt Lauer was the host, need I say more?
I was surprised that Jiminy Glick (and Adrian VanVorhees) was nowhere to be found on the list.
Sadly too many people do not look at the views of candidates. However, I am sure that Braun didn't espouse too many of her true views during the campaign either.
Could it possibly be that Oprah Winfrey, a black woman, might have been more inclined to give money to a black woman who had a chance of winning a Senate seat . . . in her own state mind you?
It doesn't necessarily mean Oprah is left wing.
The true test may come if Condoleeza Rice were to run for office at some point. My bet is that you'll Oprah say kind words about her.
You obviously didn't watch last night. They did just that. Dr. Phil was on the list, along with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Ellen Degenrate etal.
If you had to pick a "Greatest American", not necessarily the greatest politician, or greatest founding father, then my vote would have been Will Rogers. I wrote this and the Oklahoma City paper published it on Saturday.
==================
Will Rogers was certainly the "Greatest Oklahoman", and ought to be among those nominated in the Discovery Channel series "Greatest American" beginning on June 5. But of the 100 nominees, from George Washington to Hugh Hefner, the name of Will Rogers isn't on the list. The State of Oklahoma runs the Will Rogers Memorial in Claremore. They have apparently failed to keep the history of Will Rogers sufficiently in the public eye to gain his nomination.
Will was born a Cherokee Indian in Oklahoma Territory. He grew up in the iconic image of "An American", working as a genuine cowboy. He rode in some of the last great cattle drives across the Great Plains. When he died, the entire nation grieved. Thousands streamed past his casket, and squadrons of airplanes towed black streamers over New York City.
In a day before television, when the most popular entertainment was going to the movies, Will Rogers was it's biggest box office star. When the inaugural nationwide, coast-to-coast radio program went on the air, the bill was Will Rogers and the president of the United States. Back when the only news was in the newspapers, Rogers daily editorial, "Will Rogers Says", was on the front page of the newspaper of record, the New York Times, and hundreds of other local papers.
When America needed an "Ambassador at Large", to visit far away Kings and Presidents and Tyrants, Will Rogers did the job. When America needed to laugh during the darkest days of the Depression, Will Rogers made Americans smile.
When America needed someone to take the lead in the years before World War II, Will nagged the country in his daily editorial to get off it's hind end and design and build airplanes. He said, "in the next war, they won't shoot something at you, they will drop it on you". He was correct, and when war finally came, it started with an airplane. And it ended with an airplane. The airplanes designed at Rogers urging helped America become the first Superpower. He is an inductee into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, and he wasn't even a pilot.
There are great American politicians, inventors, entrepreneurs and entertainers. Great Americans of all different categories. But the overall title of "Greatest American" certainly belongs to Will Rogers.
The Discovery Channel got their list of 100 nominees from a survey. That Americans would nominate Michael Jackson and Michael Jordan, but leave out Will Rogers says a lot about who we are today. And it tells us how badly we've educated our children about their heritage.
Yes I do. The fallacy lies not with your portrayal of Nazism and Communism as being similar as they were. The National Socialist Workers Party was very similar to Communism.
Your error is in assuming, as it is always portrayed in the media, that Nazism is on the right.
Also disagree that Stalin was not a good Communist.
I saw Audie Murphy listed, did they forget to put that other great war hero, the french looking one who served 4mos in Nam on the list? How could they blow that one, along with his buddy the swimmer? Where is Tail Gunner Joe? AuH2O? Jimmy Stuart? Many of the listed Great Americans are Press hyped individuals that they made into legends, not by their deeds, but through MSM BS.
I suppose that 95% of Americans don't know who Salk was.
If ANYONE gives money to, or votes for, a politician based solely, or even largely, on SKIN COLOR, then that person should be barred from ever voting again.
Careful . . . with that attitude you may alienate some of our GOP voters in the South.
It's slap FULL of demonrats.
7 of the 8 members of Kentucky Congressional delegation are Republican. How is YOUR state doing?
Seems to me that a lot of people on that list are not only not "great", they are even below average (well below) as far as what I have always thought greatness to be.
Robert E. Lee and his horse Traveller
Haven't seen any of them protesting the actions and lies of the left who have taken their party away from them.
Totally agree with you on that thought Doc.
On another thought,Kentuck? Oprah talks out of both sides of her mouth better than just about anyone. She will NOT champion Condi Rice as a Presidential candidate nor give $$ to her campaign. Why not? Condi would knock her out of her self-appointed place as America's foremost black female (which in my book, Oprah never was) Rosa Parks maybe, but never Oprah.
Oh really? Does Zell Miller ring a bell?
Beyond Zell, whom I do understand mainstream Democrats being angered by as they feel that he could have voiced his opposition without aiding the GOP, I think that is the main focus of the DLC.
I honestly have nothing against Lee. He was a remarkable leader with an amazing military mind.
That being said, I don't want to see him on a list of "Greatest Americans." When it all comes down to it, he committed treason.
He no more should be on that list than George Washington should be on a list of "Greatest Brits."
Zell is one man who had been voicing his opposition before speaking out for President Bush - but none of you were listening to him. I'm certain you realize I was speaking of the mainstream of the Demo party. We'll see at the next election, won't we?
And Robert E Lee should have never been charged with treason. You do know that he was never brought to trial on that charge/prosecuted by the government?
