Today, May 26, 2005, the American public and people all over the world witnessed a spectacle on the floor of the US Senate. A US Senator from Ohio, Senator Voinovich, broke down on the floor of the Senate and cried as he expressed his opposition to President Bush's nomination for UN Ambassador, John Bolton. In his impassioned and (apparently) sincere plea, he cried and told America and the world how he was unwilling to "risk" our representation at the UN to Mr. Bolton, and how he, Senator Voinovich feared for his children and grandchildren.
Apparently in considering Mr. Bolton, Senator Voinovich was not present at the confirmation hearings where Bolton testafied and has not met with Mr. Bolton. This alone makes one suspicious of the true nature of today's spectacle.
But, a grandfather fearing for his children and grandchildren is not something to take lightly or cavalierly dismiss. As the father of five children, and the grandfather of three grandchildren with a fourth on the way, I know this to be true. So, I wanted, grandfather to grandfather...father to father...to respond to Senator Voinovich.
I understand his feelings. I too fear for my children and grandchildren.
But I do not fear having a man such as John Bolton as our Ambassador...I fear NOT having a man such as Mr. Bolton as our Ambassador to the UN.

I think Voinovich is either a lousy actor or a very disturbed man.
If my earlier hits didn't say it---GREAT WRITE JEFF!!!!!
It's been a long time since Voinivich did some good, say when he was Mayor of Cleveland(no GOP mayor since).
When something as bizarre as Voinovich's performance happens, I think it is a signal to look "outside the box". The guy comes out of the blue with this stuff and simply sticks out like a sore thumb. There is a really, really foul stench in the air.
As the classic saying goes, "Nothing good will come of this." The lessons of history and human nature are all too clear on that point. It is the twilight of the Republic.
Thank you. I am in Idaho and cannot speak much regarding Vionovitch's politics there in Ohio, though we did live in the Cincy area (I worked in Milford) between 1988 and 1992.
Agreed...and as the saying goes...it stinks to high heaven!
There are tens of millions who do.
In so doing, the twilight and even darkness may come (and I believe there is a very tough row to hoe)...but they shall be followed by a glorious dawn. In the end we shall have constitutional restoration.
What an embarrassment for the Republican Party. What an embarrassment for America.
Dry your tears Voino, sober up.
I'll also put the NASA situation on Sen. Whine's shoulders too, along with our favorite Hollywood wannabe Dennis"the bigtime menace" Kucinich!!!
A longtime family friend will be losing his job at NASA after 7 years of service.
I know it was GWB's decision but there had to be some behind the scenes stuff going on too.....
Thank you so much for your always stirring essays!
Just what IS Voinovich's connection with the UN and it's bagmen?
As is every woman in the Senate, especially Hillary.
Love your tagline
I agree - there is and will be a very tough row to hoe, and there are no guarantees.
I did think that Bush's election and re-election bought us a little time. What I failed to appreciate was just how little time that was.
I couldn't have said it any better!!!
Exaclty...spot on!
You are very welcome AG!
Think clearly. Who is disadvantaged by Bolton. It is something bigger and more sinister than the Mafia.
I dunno. He wasn't on my radar screen until Bolton. It's like his allegiance is with the UN instead of the US. If it was acting, I don't understand what he thought he'd gain from it. It was just eeewwww creepy...
Actually, many yesterdays ago.
