Today, May 26, 2005, the American public and people all over the world witnessed a spectacle on the floor of the US Senate. A US Senator from Ohio, Senator Voinovich, broke down on the floor of the Senate and cried as he expressed his opposition to President Bush's nomination for UN Ambassador, John Bolton. In his impassioned and (apparently) sincere plea, he cried and told America and the world how he was unwilling to "risk" our representation at the UN to Mr. Bolton, and how he, Senator Voinovich feared for his children and grandchildren.
Apparently in considering Mr. Bolton, Senator Voinovich was not present at the confirmation hearings where Bolton testafied and has not met with Mr. Bolton. This alone makes one suspicious of the true nature of today's spectacle.
But, a grandfather fearing for his children and grandchildren is not something to take lightly or cavalierly dismiss. As the father of five children, and the grandfather of three grandchildren with a fourth on the way, I know this to be true. So, I wanted, grandfather to grandfather...father to father...to respond to Senator Voinovich.
I understand his feelings. I too fear for my children and grandchildren.
But I do not fear having a man such as John Bolton as our Ambassador...I fear NOT having a man such as Mr. Bolton as our Ambassador to the UN.

Agreed.
No doubt republican senators ate at home tonight..
He's up for reelection in 2006...if Ohio doesn't get rid of him I'll be disappointed.
I'm with you.
I believe somene else was fishing in his pond.
You are right! This indecent spectacle demonstrates the sordid politcal corruption in the beltway. Somebody has the goods on him....the mafia perhaps. Maybe the other mafia prncess Nancy "no blink" Pelosi might know something about this latest spectacle.
I fear that my children and grandchildren will become crying wimps...
...Or shed crocodile tears.

Good article Jeff!
He's either a shameless charlatan or mentally ill, or perhaps both. I diagnose Jimmy Swaggart Syndrome.
But in the end, the dining engagements and that sort of embarassment are nothing compared to the injury we are experiencing over the inability for a majority senate to conduct the agenda that got it elected in the first place.
I know you know this...I am just venting in frustration.
Good for you...God bless your efforts and thank you for being involved!
My sense of utter betrayal is immense. Surrender is never a winning strategy. This is the sort of thing that brings the inevitable Day that much closer.
I stand behind your reasons too Jeff. But I believe his greatest fear should be that any of those people he refers to as his children and grandchildren, turn out to be as girliemannish as he, even the girls.
Thank you.
OR... Lindsay promised nancy-boy Voiny more funding for his pet project, the Glenn NASA thingy, when he becomes President if he would take the spotlight off him!
These are the only two things that make sense for a man to CRY about a UN ambassadorship!!! It still makes me cringe.
Well said.
"It is time that we told and outlined a direct plan for the UN toi either shape up, or for us to end the relationship and invite them to leave our shores...permanently."
Absolutely! Bravo.
Well said. If the Senate Republicans, who are in a majority and whose collegues control the House and the Presidency, cannot confirm a UN ambassador or judicial appointments. THEY NEVER WILL!
Some of them are just downright charlatains and turncoats who are abetting their political oppostion for niceties, personal advancemnt (in the form of promises from the other side of the aisle), and ideological closeness to the other side. In so doing, they are also abetting our enemies IMHO.
If continued (and if it exists in a time when abject enemies want nothing more than to kill us all...then I am afraid it is not going to be abated anytime soon) it will, as you say, lead to an inevitable train wreck...and a very bad one.
I just wish we had someone up there who would take it to the UN just that straight. And I wish they would do so...yesterday.
Whatever the reason, we the people must stand against it.
