I can only imagine working for McLame would be enough to drive you nuts. I have not met one person who knows McCain that has much good to say about him and your neighbor confirms what I hear.

Three Democrats broke ranks and voted to confirm the nomination...

They were not needed for the filibuster. This is not critical to the Dim base vote. So they were allowed to vote the other way in order to fool their other constitutents.

Is Bolton now "extraordinary circumstances" according to the Dems?? The notorious seven need to WAKE UP and look at how they are being used by the Dems. EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE from now on is "extraordinary circumstances" to liberal Democrats. The ONLY choice is to nuke the Dems and get our judges in, and then make the libs follow up on their threat to "shutdown the Senate", exposing them as the obstructionists to freedom that they are.

DeWine and Graham acted like there would be no more filibusters to hold up appointments -- guess they didn't read the fine print and like you have to wonder if the RATs have gone too far on Bolton now and they might be rethinking that you cannot trust the RATs at all.

What's with Voinivich? I saw a replay of him on TV and no one gets that teary-eyed on the floor of the Senate over a UN nominee. I don't get him at all.

I know. There are DU trolls who are members.

And some of them are screaming the loudest that the Republicans aren't "conservative" enough.

Blowhard phonies, that's what they are. Unfortunately, you really can't tell them from the real blowhards around here...........especially on threads like this one........

I don't understand how anyone can support a party that has encouraged massive debt, expansion of social programs, continued support of groups like the National Endowment of the Arts and has continually ignored the problem of illegals working and living in the USA.

I'm not pleased with the current state of the party either, but it sure is better than the only other alternative we have at the moment. Frist needs to reel the RINOs in and do it quick. We are squandering a great opportunity to make a real difference in this country. I get extremely annoyed when our own base screws us too.

"We have some RHINO's in our Party....so be it....we have to take them out in the next round of primaries....."

Do you include Rinos like Spector, who was fully supported over a conservative like Pat Toomey by both Bush and Santorum in last year's Primary?

I watched Voinovich too, and I think there is seriously something wrong with him.

I mean, who cries about a UN appointment?? I think he's losing it.

See #83. The entire "compromise" was about judges (both who the 7 "DINOs" would not filibuster except in "extraordinary circumstance" and who the 7 Dwarves would not change the filibuster rules for). It said nothing about other nominations.

That is NOT a choice now that the 7 RINOS have defected. I'll say this one more time. The Nuke option requires 51 votes. There are 55 Republicans in the Senate. 55 minus 7 does not equal 51.

Question: if the Republicans were to be conservative-only, the Democrats would likely counter to be liberal-only and that creates a boundary line. What would happen to the moderates, do they form a 3rd party? (Not saying I support them, but that is an interesting thought)

I think the poli sci 101 answer is correct. Our system is based on single member districts (there are a few exceptions, of course) and winner-take-all elections. That means the game is to get a majority, or at least a plurality. This drives both parties toward the center. It also militates against third parties because third parties produce fratricide. These are moderating effects which Americans have traditionally been taught to view as A Good Thing.

If you want a different dynamic, it's simple enough to do. Shift to a parliamentary system and opt for some sort of weighted voting scheme. We too could have 107 ideologically distinct parties. Some think this would be an improvement. I don't.

There can never ever be a "moderate party". Moderates don't believe ANYTHING. They are just wishy-washy appeasers who must cling to people who stand for something to be sucessful.

I think you listen to Rush too much. There are a lot of opinionated moderates. Calling them "wishy-washy" or "RINOs" or other derogatory names is not helpful. Not everyone agrees with Rush 100%. Maybe you do, and that is fine, but if the only people you want in the GOP are people who agree with Rush, you are going to have a minority party.

If the GOP leaders decided to take a hard Conservative line, the Dems just might go back to clintoon-style triangulation, which gets them the moderate votes.

The problem is that GOP politicians have a very strong tendency to articulate mushy positions that are absolutely indefensible. If the Democrats propose some new $10B/year program that is a just plain Bad Idea, Republicans need to oppose it outright, rather than "compromise" for a $5B/year version. Even if the refusal to "compromise" means the Democrats force through the $10B program, the fact that the Republicans opposed the program from the get-go will help them kill it after it proves to be ineffective. By contrast, if the program is funded for $5B with Republican support and then fails, the Democrats will successfully argue that it was underfunded and thus needs to be funded for $10B. The Republicans will have no effective counter and thus instead of a program costing $10B and being cancelled, it will cost $5B the first year, $10B the second, and even more after that.

It has been an odd spring -- we have had very little rain here in Norman and this past week when it rained it was during the night and in the morning and nice in the afternoon. Usually thunderstorms spring up here in late afternoon after heating occurs. By the end of May tornado's normally move north of Oklahoma.

I was outside looking at the green sky this spring when the weather guy said that circulation was occuring in the clouds moving over the street where I live. Small one touched down with no damage about two miles north of here. Our whole neighborhood was out looking at the sky like nothing was going to happen. We were not very smart even though the weather people kept saying there was a lowering.

The Nuke option requires 51 votes. There are 55 Republicans in the Senate. 55 minus 7 does not equal 51. The infamous seven Republicans can vote for the nuclear option if they choose to. The agreement they made isn't legally binding, it's just a gentleman's agreement. Since the libs have already violated the spirit of the agreement, the seven should wake up and pull out of the deal.

"but it sure is better than the only other alternative we have at the moment."

It's people like we conservatives that are making an attempt to provide a reasonable alternative to the Republican and Democratic party. It might take a few more years but with the democrat party swaying further to the left and the republican party attempting to replace what is now the democrat party we just may provide a viable option to the two corrupt parties we have now.
