LA mayor-elect breaks with governor on civilian border patrols

Los Angeles (AP) --

Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he opposes civilian volunteers patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border to discourage illegal immigration, putting him at odds with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"We need our Department of Homeland Security, which patrols the border ... to address the issue of security," Villaraigosa, who was elected Tuesday, told CNN.

"We have an old saying from the days of the wild, wild West ... leave your gun outside of the city limits," Villaraigosa added. "It doesn't make any sense for people to take the law into their own hands."

In comments last month that were criticized on both sides of the border, Schwarzenegger praised the so-called Minuteman Project in Arizona, which enlisted hundreds of volunteers, some armed, to patrol the Arizona border to document and report illegal crossings.

"I think they've done a terrific job, and look, they've cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants by a huge percentage," the governor said in a radio interview. A day later he called the federal government "irresponsible" because it has not acted to safeguard the borders.

Aides to Schwarzenegger have said the governor would not object to Minuteman volunteers coming to California, but noted that they would not be allowed to carry weapons under state law. President Bush has called the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes."

Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson had no comment on Villaraigosa's remarks.

Villaraigosa spokesman Joe Ramallo said the Minuteman controversy was not a priority for the mayor-elect,

>> The most radical mayor ever to be elected to a top 5 (in population) US city. This state is slipping even further away. <<

But haven't you heard? The election of RINO Ahnuld will magically cause the state to drift rightward because he happens to have an "R" next to his name. Ahnuld will "deliver" the state to Bush, swing a bunch of state legislature districts, help defeat a bunch of corrupt congressman, and make sure the state takes "baby steps" towards Republican rule.

Let's see, 54 electoral votes go to Kerry WITHOUT him lifting a finger, every single Republican challenger Ahnuld backs for the general assembly is defeated, Bill Jones, a former STATEWIDE official and the the STRONGEST candidate the state GOP could run against Ultra-lib Boxer is whole-heartedily backed by Ahnuld goes down in flames (against BOXER?!), Gavin Newsom gives us gay marriage, Villagosia gives us Atzlan...

THANK GOODNESS RINO ARNULD "DELIEVERED" CALIFORNIA TO THE GOP, EH?

I thought the border was outside the city limits?

Give it time, and there will be no border and no city limits, just a bigger, pushier, Mexico, demanding ever more for its citizens.

[[Glad I will be Dead in 30 years or sooner. I am so angry at what our elected leaders have done to the America that I once knew. It has become a bad drugstore novel.]]

I was just telling my wife the exact same thing yesterday. The America that we knew growing us as kids is long gone. We are now on the fast track to 3rd world status. Our elected officials have handed this country over to Mexico without a shot even being fired in anger.

The citizens of LA got exactly what they deserved when they elected this anti-American sock suppet of the Mexican government as Mayore of LA. Native born whites will soon realize that they are no longer welcome in their own city.

Yeah, but he probably thinks he will be one of the elite, and in Mexico that means you have power and $$$$.

How many people know that Villaraigosa is a made up name? It's a combination of his surname (Villar) and his wife's name Raigosa.

Doesn't that make him a girly man?

I wonder how many illegals voted for this guy? IMO, the first step to saving California is to actively prosecute voter fraud. We might even be able to lose a few of our leftist representatives with fewer illegals voting.

"We need our Department of Homeland Security, which patrols the border ... to address the issue of security," Villaraigosa, who was elected Tuesday, told CNN.

Well now we know that the new mayor of LA is either a blithering idiot or an outright liar. The Department of Homeland Security cares nothing about illegal immigration even when middle east terrorists enter through Mexico, because to the Bush administration the open borders are a sacred cow.

I hope the citizens of America are watching LA and realizing that the same kind of politician will be coming to your town to make the laws soon.

For five years, I have tried to tell people that the threat is in the vote of these illegals. Once they start voting, the America as we have know it is out the window forever. Thanks, George Bush! and the rest of the no nothings in our government.

So Villaraigosa also dictates policy for San Diego city and county?

Or did someone move the border while I was asleep?

<< President Bush has called the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes." >>

That particular canard is growing big strong legs!

[Not even -- and notwithstanding that he did not call the Arizona volunteers "vigilantes"...

Brian, aren't you splitting hairs here? How much closer than this does Bush have to come before I can infer than he was talking about the MMP? Do you think Bush was just referring to "vigilantes" in some general sort of a way?

Q. And, President Bush, I wanted to ask you about your opinion about those people who are hunting migrant people along the border.

PRESIDENT BUSH: I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America. I'm for enforcing law in a rational way. That's why you got a Border Patrol, and they ought to be in charge of enforcing the border.
