Newsweek apologizes for getting Koran-Guantanamo Bay story wrong. (The Editor's Desk)
Newsweek ^ | 05/15/05 | The Editor's Desk

May 23 issue - Did a report in NEWSWEEK set off a wave of deadly anti-American riots in Afghanistan? That's what numerous news accounts suggested last week as angry Afghans took to the streets to protest reports, linked to us, that U.S. interrogators had desecrated the Qur'an while interrogating Muslim terror suspects. We were as alarmed as anyone to hear of the violence, which left at least 15 Afghans dead and scores injured. But I think it's important for the public to know exactly what we reported, why, and how subsequent events unfolded.

The more I think about it, I tend to agree with you even more. In any war, there are little acts of cruelty on both sides. Not every single person on our side is going to be 100% perfect in their actions. A reasonable person knows this.

So then the question is this: does the value of letting the public know about this supposed infraction outweigh the danger to our troops, our foreign policy, and ultimately perhaps the success of the War on Terror. Reasonable American citizens who love their country should answer "NO."

If we allow ourselves to be sidetracked by the question of whether or not the source was real, whether or not the source was telling the truth, etc. we allow ourselves to be deflected from what really is the main issue: Newsweek is deliberately printing stories to inflame the Moslems, and as a SIDE issue it is obvious that they will make stories up when they cannot find a true account.

This is the type of P.C. garbage that the MSM loves. Even if the story were true...big deal, right? I mean, cry me a river.
But the story wasn't true and people died because of it.
Great job Newsweek!

This absolutely crosses the line from the usual sloppy, biased, advocacy-driven "reporting" to actively undermining our war effort. If this doesn't make the case for imposing wartime censorship (which worked pretty damn well in WWII) I don't know what will.

Makes you wonder just how much the MSM was getting away with prior to FR and blogs now doesn't it?

They have been lying for decades. But, I think it used to be more subtle, it has progressive gotten more "in your face" biased, and now we've reached the bottom. It is no longer news, or opinion, it is pure propaganda.

Their shoddy ass journalism got people killed.

Don't kid yourself...this was intended to create the situation it created...MSM has been undermining everything this administration has done from the get-go. There should be severe consequences for things like this.

What Newsweek did was IRRESPONSIBLE and got people killed. Demand that your public school library end their subscription to this agitprop rag or else place a sticker on the covers saying, "Warning, Leftist Bias inside. Not liable for any deadly riots that may result from contents."

We keep catching them at it, and they keep on lying. I hope all these media organizations go broke, the reporters be forced to flip burgers for a living. (But I wouldn't eat at a food joint where a reporter had access to the food!)

Lead story on ABC News tonight. It was also on the CBS news. Coming up on NBC, too.

They're eating themselves on this story

They wanted us to hand over the "people responsible". Good. Newsweak won't mind us knock on their doors and handing them plane tickets, will they?

I want the text books to spell out Zogbyism for future generations. The left claims that the "Red Scare" of the forties and fifties was all a hoax dreamed up by Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy was right about there being Communists in American institutions, political offices, and Hollywood. Zogby was wrong about John Kerry winning the Presidency (then again they tried to snowjob the US public with phoney statistics and poll numbers).

How MANY MANY lies have the leftist editors been caught spreading? We cannot sweep this under the rug. We are not forced to subscribe to Pravda. Schools need to reject this crap here and now. I don't want my tax dollars buying these publications and I don't want them being accepted as "truth".

Enough is enough.

Welcome to posting, lurker :-) Nice first post!

One point I'd like to make about your "The Muslims are a bunch of idiots" comment. Note that "Those Americans" do stupid stuff, too. An outsider could say, "Look at how they RE-elected a dope-smoking, lying, @!#@# called Bill Clinton!" or "Look how they have let morals slide so far in their country," etc. The point is, there are idiots everywhere...and just as I hope I'm not judged by the stupidity of a plurality, neither will I judge *all* Muslims in such a way.

You don't have to censor their words, just prosecute them for treason when their lies stir up the enemy in war time and give them "ammunition" against the US.

If this information DID come from an inside source, that needs to be investigated. Because someone on the inside is trying to sabotage our efforts in the middle east.

Oh wait, that's not news either.

Sheesh.
