CNN's Kelly Arena reports that one man is being held by Maryland State Police at an airport in Frederick, MD. The police are waiting for federal authorities to arrive on the scene.
The man is said to be the pilot of the small aircraft that triggered an evacuation of government buildings in downtown Washington when he reportedly violated restricted airspace.
Frederick, MD. is located about an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. along the I-270 corridor.
I'm on the opposite side of the country and have no chart, but earlier posts indicated the ADIZ, controlled airspace requiring contact, is 25 NM. And they notice you even before that.
But lets just run with your scenario fast moving jet scenario. What would you propose they do different, every day, as our policy?
See, when they let loose, who knows what they'll do!?
LOL! Love the suspenders, dude.
This is interesting, because the DC area has unique airspace rules. They call themselves an ADIZ, which when I was working as a CFI, which was actually marked the Boundaries of US airspace.
Essentially, no aircraft can operate in the ADIZ without contacting ATC, filing a flight plan, and getting a transponder code for penetrating the ADIZ. However, the ADIZ is superimposed of the most controlled from of airspace, class B. Which requires a clearance to enter, and requires Positive ATC control. It looks like all GA flight is restricted for about a 10 mile radius from the Capital. That is 5 minutes for a 152, from first error to overflying the capital. A jet can cover this in less then 2 minutes without looking suspicious.
A jet out of national probably would take less then 60 seconds to overfly the capital after first deviation from ATC commands. That is much more dangerous than a dopey Cessna.

Oh, there's a bad illegal immigrant joke in there somewhere. I'm not touching it!
LOL! Could you imagine if AQ started recruiting blue hairs in FL? As long as they get dinner at 4:30 they'd be dangerous!
Actually it was a bad Ted Kennedy Joke....as in Yeahaw, Dukes of Chapaquidick...splash!
Don't know about that but it's amusing to me that Frederick, MD, is the home field for AOPA - the Airplane Owners and Pilots Assn. As a member, I can say they've been doing their level best to keep private pilots aware of both the Washington DC ADIZ (air defense Identification zone) that was apparently the factor in this case, and the TFRs (temp flight restrictions) which apply anywhere Dubyah or Cheney land.
And I can testify that, with all the traveling the Prez is doing pumping his SS reform package, a pilot has to be very careful - almost lucky - to avoid violating a TFR. Since they're generally 30 miles in radius, they affect not just the major airport where the Prez might land, but all the small GA (general aviation) fields nearby.
Ah, got it! I was thinking souped up South of the Border vehicles.
I have a modest proposal. Allow no aircraft with any Muslim aboard to travel to or within the United States.
LOL!!!!!
Ah..so Smoketown is in the Lancaster area. Thanks, Dr.
thus a private jet going 425 MPH would take less than 2 minutes from the moment it penetrated the perimeter to the time it reached or hit the White House.Duh!
Can you say 'Patriot Missile Battery'?
Duh!
Patriot PAC-3
Air Defense System
Raytheon (USA)Patriot Missile System provides defense of critical assets at the corps and theater level. It is designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles and limited tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs). Such capabilities were introduced with the Patriot PAC-2 system upgrades, and more advanced PAC-3 missile, which introduces advanced antitactical missile capability.
Oh, I don't know about that! One could take one's vehicle to the guys at Monster Garage, and - voila! - you got a flying car...
And God forbid if we start cutting down on entitlement progams -- that might give them motivation.
