WE HAVE A POPE!!!
A truly amazing day. Those who sought to overturn 2,000 years of tradition and teaching will be crestfallen, and rightly so. Cardianl Ratzinger (now Benedict XVI) will have his hands full dealing with the barbarians both within the church and without, but his experience under Pope John Paul II The Great has readied him for this day and this hour.
God bless him and us all.
Our Lord said that He came not to bring peace, but a sword. A little division can be good every now and again, and there are some bad people within the Church that ought to be divided from Her. I hope "Father" McBrien at Notre Dame takes this as a big hint and goes and joins the Episcopal Church, which he would have done years ago, if he were intellectually honest.
That said, I think Benedict XVI has shown humility and sanctity in his personal life, just like John Paul II. No one would have been as close to John Paul as Ratzinger was if he did not have a deep spirituality.
I don't think Benedict XV was uppermost in Ratzinger's mind in choosing his name, though it may have played some role.
I would imagine his choice of name has far more to do with St. Benedict, patron of Europe, patron of the re-conversion of Europe. Ratzinger's greatest concern is the effort to obliterate Christianity from Europe, to deny it any standing whatsoever in the E.U. If that trend is not reversed, the day will come when the bishop of Rome will once more be crucified in the Vatican Hippodrome (figuratively or perhaps even something approaching literally).
Ratzinger has written extensively on this "culture wars" theme. He does so from a European vantage point, but with globalization, it is an issue for everyone, even in the Third World. The exact way these culture wars play out differs in Europe and the United States and Latin America and Africa, but the principles are the same and Ratzinger has thought about them long and hard.
Funny that Malachy's prophecy for Peter the Roman says NOTHING like that at all. It says:
"In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, & Judex tremêdus judicabit populum suum. Finis. (In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.)"
Nothing about Satan being pope.
Not a day to argue, mommy.
not arguing at all, sink. it is a joyous day.
Some posters are saying he resembles Ariel Sharon but I think he looks a lot like Pope Paul VI.
Might be. I wondered about that also.
No, but Catholic bigotry in Germany helped Hitler's rise and fueled his early anti-Semitism.
Face it. It's not a pretty history.
"Spirit of Vatican II" sounds like "our living Constitution"
Yeah, I discovered that after I posted, when I heard them say it. I thought it was just a funny coincidence.
This 27 year old Baptist has never seen a pope selected before... :-)
Why thank you! Why does it make you feel that way? When I prayed for the Council of Cardinals in church on Sunday I felt Ratzinger was going to be elected Pope. My minister who is an ex-navy nuke sub chief was lamenting the antics of Bishop Gene Robinson and how important it is to have strong leaders in his sermon. (Read II Peter 2 which I got in prayer time Saturday. This will shock you.)I have been thinking about this since the death of JPII and felt CR was best qualified and a man very similar to JPII in terms of his humanity, spirituality, personality and temperament. However he will be more of a bulldog and more confrontational. I also feel he is the right man at the right time to start to confront this scourge of liberation theology which has unfortunately polluted the minds on many Christians everywhere. I would not be suprised to start hearing denouncements about this problem from Billy Graham, Pat Robertson and other religious leaders and soon. BG will be speaking soon this month and we should check it out. It is always interesting to watch God speak through all His annointed and confirm His message.
I agree with that. but, given his age, I just think Ratzinger's focus is going to be on the Church, and not on the wider world. Clearly the cardinals wanted a transitional papacy.
Does Ratzinger speak English?
i don't know, but i understand they are stroking out over on DU.... ; )
WHEN THEY ARE MAD I AM GLAD. Shows we are doing EVERYTHING right. Our new Pope is happily welcomed. God Bless Pope Benedict Our new Holy Father.
yes he does, they had a recent interview with him on EWTN this aft after the announcement, it was with regards to his book.

Virtually all Bible scholars agree that the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem are Enoch and Elijah. They were the only two people in the Old Testament to be raptured into heaven alive. Some people think Moses is one of the Two Witnesses, but Moses died on earth, and his physical was merely hidden in secret place where Satan couldn't find it. No rapture involved.
Of the two, Enoch was Jewish, whereas Elijah came from Tishba, which lay outside of Israel and Judea, thus making him a gentile. Therefore, Gloriae Olivae is the prophesied Elijah to come, and is one of the Two Witnesses to arrive in Jerusalem, after he leaves the soon-to-be destroyed city of Rome, the seat of the Antichrist antipope.
And it is Jerusalem, upon the Mount of Olives where His beloved Lord had once referred to him in prophecy 1,975 years earlier, that Gloriae Olivae will lay down both the sceptre and crown granted him as vicar of Christ's Church on earth, to await the One to Whom it truly belongs, Jesus of Nazareth, Lord and God Almighty. It is at that point that the forces of the Antichrist shall fire upon Gloriae Olivae and his faithful fellow followers of Jesus of Nazareth, making martyrs of them all.
Then they will take Gloriae Olivae's corpse and with Enoch the Jewish Witness, throw them into the streets of Jerusalem so the world can gaze upon their dead bodies. And, after three and a half days, God will say 'Come up here', and Enoch and Elijah will go up to Heaven. At that very hour, a severe earthquake will rock Jerusalem. It will be September 5, 2005 when the Gentile nations and peoples will be sanctified by the blood shed by Gloriae Olivae upon the Mount of Olives, as God required Jewish blood to be shed by His other Son Jesus the Messiah, and Olivae's true older brother. And the two sticks will become one.
It is being reported that Ratzinger is fluent in both English and Italian. The omission would seem to be Spanish, not English.
