Excellent line.

Will Benedict select his successor, or was this already anticipated by John Paul II?

No pope is bound by the administrative decisions of his predecessor. Benedict has the absolute power to hire and fire and transfer bishops or other functionaries. With a few exceptions, every Vatican bureucrat lost his job with John Paul's death.

Dear Homer_J_Simpson,

Dead popes don't appoint bishops.

The new bishop fo Monterey, CA, will be appointed by Pope Benedict XVI.

It would be a blessing if he were to prove to be the Hammer of the heretics.

I do hope and pray that, as Pope, Ratzinger is not a divisive figure.

The people of the world had 26 years of a Pope who reached into their souls and hearts with his words and personality. Ratzinger's dry style is reminiscent of Paul VI.

I did notice, just now, that Ratzinger did not put on the papal white cassock, but just put a large white rochet and the red mozzetta over his black cardinal cassock. Nice informal touch.

Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, will select his successor. It is impossible for the Pope to know candidates for the episcopacy; he must rely on "kingmakers" in each country.

Yep. Tell me, is Guardian Angels still so beautifully appointed? I like to go to Mass there on fishing weekends (he fishes, I roam). If you ever want to go to Mass in a church that feels and looks like a lecture hall at the local Comm. college, drive on up! Fully diocese approved,of course!

It's part of that series of books "______ for Dummies." There is a Judaism for Dummies, Buddhism for Dummies, Computers for Dummies, Whatever for Dummies. The title is not meant to be insulting.

And he makes a cute little Pope. (Can I say that? LOL)

In the old days, you probably wouldn't have, because many Catholics (or other Christians) probably wouldn't even have seen a reasonable drawing of the Pope. In these days of mass media, we feel like the Pope is a member of the family.

Even as far back as 150 years ago, people in Europe, at least, had a personal attachment to Pope Pius IX ... "Pio Nonno," in Italian, means "Pius the Ninth," but also "Grandpa Pio."

Personally, I'm just not that much of a prophecy person. There are always correlations that can be made, and of course, I believe in the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah, Jesus ... but in terms of "private revelation," I'm reminded of something St. Catherine Laboure mentioned when something she had predicted didn't happen: "Well, I just got it wrong!"

Guardian Angels is very beautiful. If you are in town after mid June, please join us for mass at St. Mary's. We had sinking floor problems so are doing major remodeling. At present mass is celebrated in the hall.
