POPE BENEDICT XV (1914-1922) Giacomo della Chiesa (1854-1922) Pope Benedict XV promulgated the Code of Canon Law in 1917, largely prepared during the reign of his predecessor. This was the first time in the history of the Church that canon law had been brought under one cover instead of being collected in various books of precedential decisions and opinions. He maintained his predecessor's attitude against the heresy of Modernism. His reign was an overture to the reigns of his two successors; much that they achieved was initiated by him.
