Tiberias dig unearths very rare marble floor

By Eli Ashkenazi

A marble floor dating from the first century CE was unearthed during this season's excavations of ancient Tiberias.

According to archaeologist Professor Yizhar Hirschfeld, director of the three-week dig that ended yesterday, the floor is apparently a remnant of a pavement in the palace of Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, who ruled the Galilee from 4 BCE to 38 CE.

"Jesus coins" found near the Sea of Galilee

Rare coins bearing the likeness of Jesus can be seen in a special exhibition at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The coins, bearing inscriptions in Greek such as "Jesus the Messiah, King of Kings," and "Jesus, the Messiah, the Victor," were found last year in excavations south of Tiberias, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. They were minted in the Byzantine Empire, and date from the end of the tenth to the middle of the 11th centuries. Professor Hirschfeld who directed the dig says that the "Jesus coins" - 58 of the total of 82 coins found at the site - are known technically as "anonymous folles," meaning coins which contain neither the name nor the image of the ruler of the time. Also found at the Tiberias site was a large cache of Moslem artifacts, dating from the Fatimid rule in the region. The candelabra, jugs, bells and bowls display exquisite craftsmanship and inscriptions in the ancient Kufic script, and were found in three large clay pots hidden in the foundations of a building. Archeologists speculate that the owner of the house might have been a dealer in metal objects who hid his merchandise, fearing the Crusaders who invaded Tiberias at that time.

"2005 AD translates to in CE terms.
"

"Don't want them to change their calendar. Didn't say that. Just interested why some American Educators are making this change here. Also, I would like to know what 2005 AD translates to in CE terms.
"

Well, the CE and BCE are gaining in use worldwide, so it makes sense to educate our young folks. Further, not all schoolchildren are Christian. We have lots of Jewish kids in school, too. Moslem, too. Why should they acknowledge the year in Christian terms?

Frankly, it doesn't matter all that much to me, an atheist. I'm happy with either term.

You also asked about other cultures. The Common Era dating is the standard, worldwide, for all financial and scheduling matters. The Jewish year date is used in Israel, and the Islamic year in some Islamic countries. However, whenever they communicate with others for business or political reasons, the BC/BCE dating is used.

The scientific community has also adopted BC/BCE almost universally, again since it deals with international scholars all the time. That's the same reason the metric system is used in the sciences. It's universal.

But, nobody's telling you not to use AD and BC. Who would care? I do advise, however, if you are doing business internationally, that you adopt the conventions. Generally, however, there is no need to use either dating system, since 2005 is assumed to be CE or AD. Only when you're referring to historical dating do these suffixes become necessary.

It's really a non-issue, except academically.

Your sarcasm is unnecessary. I happen to think the Jews are truly God's chosen people, and am a supporter of Israel.

HOWEVER, I'm hearing more and more of CE and such being used here -- and it's in an attempt to be PC. Therefore, I'm SICK of it.

Then read and watch the news more...because I've been hearing it at least 3-4 times a week for months now. Not to mention in archaeological documentaries.

Another future stop for the Christian tourist buses: "Who knows, maybe Salome danced for Herod Antipas on this very floor for the head of John the Baptist."

The article is from an Israeli paper written by an Israeli. What's your point?

So so much for Before Christ, which is now Before the Common Era, and Anno Domini/in the year of our Lord to the Common Era.

We are reaping the whirlwind.

And what event cause this break in time? Before the Current Era is before the birth of ???

PULLEEEZ. Who of significance was born in the year "0 AD"? Alright, "1 AD"? Don't be so ignorant. The only Person of signficance was born ~ 2 years before Herod's death, which was between 4 and 6 BCE. So exactly what does the "AD" and "BC" stand for? Exactly nothing.

It would be very hard to change the days of the week and the names of the months, but why not?

This is a good idea, but I like the native american method of months better, you know, like moon of the green grass, starving moon, moon of the red berries, etc. Each tribe of course had their own designations so we would have to vote on which ones we liked.

So what separates the "common era" from the period previous to that

A common reckoning of year dating, which is what COMMON ERA means. Yes, we all know some ignorant monk in the Second Century said "Jesus" was born in the year "1", but since then we have learned that was impossible, and more likely between 6 and 4 BCE (Herod died in 4 BCE). So the "AD" and "BC" are an ignorant measurement of nothing.

Anno Domini/in the year of our Lord to the Common Era.

Decided by whom? An ignorant monk in the Second Century that forgot that EVERY YEAR is the Year of the "L-rd" and basing it upon a ficticious and fallacious "birth day" of Messiah is only holding to the tradition of men - which shows what is important on this thread... Just like the ignorance on the "Jesus was born on December 25th" threads last year. Gimme a break. It isn't a plot, it is just that when one wants to stake a place in truth, it REALLY should be on TRUTH... not some ignorant tradition.
