With the log scale an 8.5 is about 3 times the strength of 8 and about 1/3 the strength of a 9.0

The creation of an Asia-wide early warning system for tsunamis must be accompanied by teaching campaigns to inform the public how to respond....Does this not just make you sick? How about a public warning system that yells "Head for high ground, NOW!" Not enough money in it, I suppose.

Isn't that part of the world on the other side of the international date line? That would either make it either on Christmas and Easter itself or two days afterwards. I always get that date line thing mixed up so I can never tell whether it's "yesterday" or "tomorrow" over there.
Either way, it's quite a coincidence.
