Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident,known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

You have got to be kidding! how can any orders to starve an innocent woman to death be legal or moral? Please do tell. Please tell me what you would say to to defend such orders?
haha.....I don't know about that...public opinion right now as I have seen it does not want the govt intruding into this matter and Bush's job approval rating has dropped 7 points as of today......maybe it is the focus on the economy or other dark and nefarious reasons...but unlike FR, there are many Repubs and conservatives (who don't want to be known ) took great offense to Congress meddling in the state's affairs.......don't ya think?????
That's the whole problem with our political climate. If conservatives had half as much spine as the liberals have arrogance, we might have a chance. As it is, we have "conservatives" without the courage of their convictions, and liberals who are pathetically lacking in convictions, but, by golly, they can sure bully us around by taking ours and beating us with them. Just once, I'd like to see our side take the risk and smack down the bullies, instead of running for cover to lick their wounds.

In this situation they should have stood aside and follow the will of the people. They didn't. They don't belong in there and should resign. They're cowards and traitors.

He even did what so many wanted, obey the court and send in state police.
But, that wasn't good enough....they would have had to fought the local cops to the death for you to be happy.
It's your government, not theirs. In the US the citizens are ultimately responsible for what their government does.
Read the Constitution. Nowhere in it does it give a president to ride in,on a white horse, and interfere physically with what's happening to Terri. As a matter of fact,President Bush has gone beyond the call of duty to help. It hasn't worked and that is NOT his fault!

I'm outraged. I'm outraged at everyone involved in this case...except for Terri.
But you're right. Terri will likely die soon and at this point, I'm not convinced we can do much else.
What we need to do is double or triple our efforts at getting a truly rational and independent-minded judiciary elected and/or appointed.
All of our anger, outrage, etc. needs to be re-directed to reforming our judiciary. We will win some and we will lose some but from here on, this is what we need to do.
Let's honor Terri in this way by doing what we can to ensure something like this never happens again.
I can easily imagine Reagan seizing the moment with a national address. If W tried this, would the networks would cut away from basketball? Guess we'll never know. Advice to the Bushes: Don't bother with condolences after Terri has passed.
Here, DCFS is not under the jurisdiction of the same court as civil matters.
On the contrary more and more Police Agencies want their officers to have college degrees. Now you have police with degrees but not a lot of common sense or street smarts. All the chief's are hired by municipal governments that are all politically correct and afraid to take chances for fear of lawsuits. I saw this coming 20 years ago.
