Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

Bet those local police are damn proud of themselves. A real feather in their caps. Maybe they'll get a friggin' medal for their bravery. Service above and beyond the norm.
I wondered if this is what had happened. The Governor was trying to prevent more innocent death. I hope none of you blames him for that. If you can't have compassion on the police on both sides, at least remember there are a LOT of Schindler supporters outside the hospice.
"Someone needs to pay with their life if Terri is taken. A life for a life. Justice."
Who do you suggest? So the correct authorities can be contacted. Think before you post, threats are being taken very seriously in this matter.
Look at those cops cuffing the kids, they are not retirees they look like they all belong to the Jose Canseco Gym Club.
OT
Someone asked today why it is that to prevent a 10 year old from giving water to a dying woman ,one needs 4 NFL linebackers size cops, but to escort a 6"2,220lbs, indicted rapist you send a 50 yr old,5"0 grandmother.
The court system is no longer about justice.
Doughty did you happen to see the guy from Vanity Unfair on Scarborough tonight? According to Mr. High and Almighty with a british accent, You and I and the people holding signs outside the hospice are right wing extremists, Terri has been dead for 15 years, and Michael is the poor victim in this whole mess.
Ain't that the damned truth! The more digging people do in the backgrounds of Michael Schiavo, Judge Greer, and others, the more "funny business" people discover. There are a lot of scumballs involved and linked together in this.
Sorry Mike, but just who would be forcing that civil war, those wanting to kill an innocent woman, or those trying to stop it? Get with it bud. The line in the sand has been drawn. We didn't draw it.
Doesn't the State of Florida understand the concept of "Separation of Powers"?
Presumably they are prepared to shoot them if necessary.
So far there's been absolutely no sign that gunplay is needed. Consequently the officers should be disarmed as soon as possible before somebody has an accident or something. AFter all, guns in the hands of Liberals (as these officers must surely be) just leap out of holsters and off tables and kill kids.
YOU ALL ARE SEVERELY LACKING IN A CIVICS LESSON ON "CONSTITUTIONALITY"!
A lot of those cops are watching out for the Schindler family too.
""...when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order,..."
So? So the State police and the locals go at it. This IS a constitutional crisis."
Looks like the crisis is over. A jucidial thug won. Next, the Michael Jackson circus...
That is something we can all agree on.
Let's hear it for Florida officers doing their duty. F'n bastards!
No kidding.
What an absolute shame.
Just to think, Janet Reno would have solved this in a Texas / Cuba micro second ------- you are gone!!!!

"Then why doesn't Gov. Bush tell them "You work for me"
IF, and I doubt it, this story is true then you should know that:
Local police work for the city. The Sheriff's department answers only to the county. The governor cannot fire any of them. Law enforcement types are very territorial and clanish. The city police usually don't like the Sheriff's deputies. Both of these don't like State law enforcement types. They all resent the FBI and other federal law enforcement types, who incidentally fight amoung themselves (remember the intell. breakdown on 9-11). They are like a bunch of male dogs pissing on trees to mark their territory.
IF this story is true, it is a sad thing that a woman dies because of a turf war between junenile acting law enforcement at the lowest levels. Grow of children!

I'd say their county is now officially on Jeb's s**t list when it comes to state funding.
