Police 'Showdown' Averted ['Team of State Agents Were En Route to Seize Terri']
Miami Herald ^ | Sat, Mar. 26, 2005 | CAROL MARBIN MILLER

Posted on 03/25/2005 7:55:28 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.

Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.

For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''

In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.

''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.

''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''

The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

I guess the judiciary has found a way to enforce their orders. Jeb Bush loses big if he stops at this.

Insulin is also used to treat hyperkalemia ( high potassium levels). Wasn't her heart attack attributed to Low potassium levels?

Remember, Mike Schiavo is an RN for the jail system in the same county. More folks are finding links between all the villains in this case. Have you seen the thread that outlines the links between judge Greer and the board of directors for the hospice?

My grandfather's next door neighbor is doing life without parole for killing her husband with insulin.

It may have changed, but when I was working in NY State a prescription was not needed to buy insulin. You did need one to buy syringes.

They don't get to say whether or not they're going to enforce a state decision though.

The Pinellas City Poloce Dept and the County Sheriffs Dept. are as guilty of this Murder as the Judge, the 11th Curcuit Ct , the 11th Court of Appeals and the Supreme Ct.

They Sure A BRAVE bunch of hob nail booted Thugs.

Kind of reminds you of NAZI Germany in the 30's and 40's

The cops are the betrayers of Christ. Don't anyone tell me it's their job. I know better.

I agree. This whole thing sticks with me in regards to Jeb. If he had the authority to do this it should have been done immediately and in a subdued fashion. Instead of proceeding in that direction he holds a press conference where he does very little except to telegraph this possible move. Yes I am wary by nature but it seems to me it set up a nice little political situation where he can claim he did everything he could do, without actually changing the outcome.

If Bush lets this end here, his presidential chances in the future are dead. Conservatives do not respect wimps.

"...when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order,..."

So? So the State police and the locals go at it. This IS a constitutional crisis.

That's just ridiculous. Jeb averted a state civil war over one woman. I think its horrible what went on but I'm not thinking a state civil war between state adn local law enforcement was something we needed.

I think you are right. They would have to have been overwhelmed, perhaps shot.

Something like this has to be planned, and kept in utmost secrecy and sprung about 3 a.m. when everyone is tired. I am surprised that the local cops did this though. I was wrong when I posted that if the Governor ordered them to stand down that they would do so.

I seriously do not believe that the Sheriffs would have shot the State Police for trying to rescue Terri..this is bunk.

Most of them probably would have been glad to step aside.

I would have loved to see each officer decide personally if Terri lives or dies by their own action.

My guess is that there would have been a miraculous wave of descent before any shooting occured.
