Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents were en route to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but they stopped short when local police told them they would enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
The incident, known only to a few and related to The Herald by three different sources involved in Thursday's events, underscores the intense emotion and murky legal terrain that the Schiavo case has created. It also shows that agencies answering directly to Gov. Jeb Bush had planned to use a wrinkle in Florida law that would have allowed them to legally get around the judge's order. The exception in the law allows public agencies to freeze a judge's order whenever an agency appeals it.

Judge Greer is President. We send our troops to wrong AO
He lost his nerve. I feel sorry for him.
That's part of the reason, but note their are conservatives that want her dead too and hide behind "state rights" to justify it.
At any rate, I'm just going to start ending all posts with the following:
Governor Bush, President Bush, Republicans-
Thank You For Standing For Life.
maybe they tried, but no one I know and I know alot of people believes that. I can't find on person that whats her to starve to death, most get very upset over this, very upset.
I'm afraid Jeb miscalculated how Greer would react. He's used to his own staff saying "yes sir." I think Jeb is a courageous man and Randall Terry is full of BS if he said "Jeb got scared." But Jeb appears to have not developed a good strategy for this confrontation with Greer. This doesn't look Presidential. If he can't handle a state judge, how is he going to deal with much tougher adversaries like Iran and North Korea. Jeb is going to have to come out swinging and fight for reform of the laws in Florida if he wants to revive his political future. I think he also needs to take Greer down hard and fight for Greer's defeat in Greer's next election. That will demonstrate that he knows how to win a tough fight.
oh yes.....and you must be against the death penalty as well......we are also a nation of laws......and the minute anyone thinks they can circumvent the law because they don't personally agree with it will in fact have part of their liberty taken away.........I do not like what is happening at all.......but on this issue where some are villifying both Bush's etc....well I draw the line......
Yawn. Yeah, right. I remember after September 11th, one of our local car dealerships got on the air warning the world to 'beware of an aroused America's wrath'. It makes you cringe.
Watch for this silly stuff. Before long, anybody wanting some free publicity is going to start claiming more of the same; that they and their (a. bowling team b. Boy Scout Troop c. Loyal Order of the Aardvarks) were this close to just getting on a bus and 'Saving Terri', by God, but, well you know the local police there...But, hey, man, we really were going to, that judge be damned.
I agree. Jeb should have went down himself. In my mind I would have pictured what Ronald Reagan would have done. He would have sent in Federal Marshals, taken custody of Terri, arrested the probate Swamp judge & ordered the Justice department to start an investigation of all the Nazis involved.
I have no personal beef to pick with you. I understand where you are coming from, but this lady's parents should have every bit as much say as Michael does. Any judge that can't see that Michael has lost any compassion he every had for Terry, is blind as a bat.
Non Hearsay, Greer is going to kill Terry. Nothing more than that is required, since Michael says something that can't be proven.
This judge Greer is hell bent to kill this woman. If I were Jeb and that bastard had communicated what he did to Jeb on the phone, I'd have swerved my motorcade directly to that courthouse and would have took that f---er nose to nose what I thought of him, and then told him that the national guard and my state marshals were ten minutes from making him irrelevent.
That's sickening.
Word has it, that the local police are infiltrated by Scientologists.
Which makes it worse that they got to rebuff the state agents.
State agents acting under state laws are stopped by LOCAL police who are enforcing a COUNTY judge's edict.
It dawned on me yesterday that Wimp-ism is a Bush family trait. They can both go to hell.
Thank G*d most Americans will refuse to obey immoral and evil laws. This is not Germany.
Hey what doesn "T.O.O." mean?
A constitutional crisis can't result from everyone obeying the law. That's called, uh, the way the system is supposed to work. Everyone being happy isn't a prerequisite.
