US House of Rep. in an Extraordinary Sunday night Session [Schiavo] (Bush Signs Schiavo bill)

Posted on 03/20/2005 6:03:40 PM PST by FoxPro

This is an unprecedented session. The Congress is meeting to save one persons life (in real time).

The only reason the Democrats are agreeing to this is that they don’t want to be known as the party that killed Terri.

This is American history happening before your eyes.

. It could be less than an hour.

Is a majority vote needed, or two-thirds?

I agree. I think it's a good thing that it's not just a voice vote. That way we can all know who the pro-death people are.

I think the difference here is that this is such an unusual and profound situation, 'extraordinary' would be the best term, where the law has proven to be incapable of providing definitive justice, and in fact there is a substantial belief that a mammoth injustice is taking place, that is depriving an innocent victim of the basic human right to life. When the judicial system so completely fails in protecting the constitutional right to life, then it would seem appropriate for Congress to consider the issue.

ROFL! If Terri had a child, I'm sure its a wonderful argument for killing her. I lost my dear mother when I was a child, so I don't need to hear Mel Watt lecture me about children being hurt. They're the ones punished most by the death of a parent.

We don't mind helping Mexicans, but let it happen while they are in Mexico, please.

The Senate has to run state wide re-elections. Too risky to oppose, so they copped out with a voice vote for terri.

Listening to the Democrats debate, I think we can now officially say.

I am cynical.

If you are this cynical, perhaps you should see a doctor. Or, better yet, a priest.

As for another point you made that Congress does not make laws for individuals, you are very wrong. Here is a list of "private bills" for individuals that have been passed by Congress since James Sensenbrenner has been chairman of the Judiciary Committee (in fact, more than 25 "private bills" for the benefit of a single individual were introduced when the Democrats last controlled the house in the 103rd Congress):

H.R.867 Title: Private Bill; For the relief of Durreshahwar Durreshahwar, Nida Hasan, Asna Hasan, Anum Hasan, and Iqra Hasan. Sponsor: Rep Holt, Rush D. [D-NJ-12] (introduced 2/13/2003) Committees: House Judiciary; Senate Judiciary House Reports: 108-531 Latest Major Action: 10/30/2004 Became Private Law No: 108-4.

H.R.530 Title: Private Bill; For the relief of Tanya Andrea Goudeau. Sponsor: Rep Baker, Richard H. [R-LA-6] (introduced 2/4/2003) Committees: House Judiciary; Senate Judiciary House Reports: 108-529 Latest Major Action: 12/23/2004 Became Private Law No: 108-6.

S.560 Title: Private Bill; A bill for the relief of Rita Mirembe Revell (a.k.a. Margaret Rita Mirembe). Sponsor: Sen Hatch, Orrin G. [R-UT] (introduced 3/19/2001) Committees: Senate Judiciary; House Judiciary House Reports: 107-129 Latest Major Action: 7/17/2001 Became Private Law No: 107-1.

S.1834 Title: Private Bill; A bill for the relief of retired Sergeant First Class James D. Benoit and Wan Sook Benoit. Sponsor: Sen Levin, Carl [D-MI] (introduced 12/14/2001) Cosponsors: (none) Committees: Senate Judiciary; House Judiciary House Reports: 107-578 Latest Major Action: 10/1/2002 Became Private Law No: 107-2.

H.R.486 Title: Private Bill; For the relief of Barbara Makuch. Sponsor: Rep Reynolds, Thomas M. [R-NY-27] (introduced 2/6/2001) Cosponsors: (none) Committees: House Judiciary; Senate Judiciary House Reports: 107-445 Latest Major Action: 10/4/2002 Became Private Law No: 107-3.

H.R.487 Title: Private Bill; For the relief of Eugene Makuch. Sponsor: Rep Reynolds, Thomas M. [R-NY-27] (introduced 2/6/2001) Cosponsors: (none) Committees: House Judiciary; Senate Judiciary House Reports: 107-446 Latest Major Action: 10/4/2002 Became Private Law No: 107-4.

H.R.2245 Title: Private Bill; For the relief of Anisha Goveas Foti. Sponsor: Rep Lantos, Tom [D-CA-12] (introduced 6/19/2001) Committees: House Judiciary; Senate Judiciary House Reports: 107-579 Latest Major Action: 11/5/2002 Became Private Law No: 107-5.

H.R.3758 Major Actions: Help Title: Private Bill; For the relief of So Hyun Jun. Sponsor: Rep McCrery, Jim [R-LA-4] (introduced 2/13/2002) Committees: House Judiciary House Reports: 107-729 Latest Major Action: 12/2/2002 Became Private Law No: 107-6.

To take just one of the bills -- and you can do your own research on Thomas.gov -- Barbara Makuch was awarded $1 million from the federal treasury because she claimed that she was denied benefits warranted to her as an employee of the FBI. Oh, and her husband was given $1 million, too.

You have neither the moral argument, or the facts on your side. Please, give it a rest.
