The UN/WTO Codex criminalizes vitamins, supplements and herbs (Take Action)

Codex Alimentarius, a United Nations trade committee, a decade ago began working on “harmonization” of the worldwide sale of supplements. It decided in November 2004 that vitamins, minerals and all other types of medicinally useful supplements, commonly also found in foods, should be traded only as pharmaceuticals. Paradoxically, the committee decided that health claims must not be made for any of them, and in large dosages they must only be available by prescription.

Codex requires that, as of August 1, 2005, all supplements have to be subject to pharmaceutical-type regulation, which requires establishment of toxicity levels and maximum/minimum dosages, before they can be sold. The principal Codex report which provides the “scientific” grounds for this impending wholesale removal of all supplements is in German and not generally available.

Legal action was taken by health freedom groups on European Union constitutional grounds and heard in the International Court in Luxembourg on January 25 this year. The result will be known in June. Because of the interlocking international treaties to which Canada is a signatory, Codex resolutions are binding for Canadians, and the World Trade Organization enforces compliance. Federal bill C-420, which gets second reading in Ottawa March 3, is designed to protect Canadians from Codex.

FDA is reviewing portions of DSHEA, the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act. The agency may propose new and overly burdensome regulations that could restrict your hard-won access to new dietary ingredients and dietary supplements that were not on the market prior to 1994 when DSHEA was passed.

Recall that 2.5 million concerned consumers contacted Congress between 1992 and 1994 to support DSHEA and assure access to their supplements.  In response to the overwhelming consumer support, Congress passed DSHEA and deliberately created new and different regulations for dietary supplements.  Congress enacted DSHEA to stop the FDA from treating dietary supplements like food additives or drugs and to protect consumer's rights to purchase these products.

Tell the FDA to uphold DSHEA and your continued access to beneficial dietary supplements today! At risk are many innovative and particularly effective dietary supplements.   FDA needs to hear from you to preserve your hard-won access to the most innovative and important health products.  Any new guidelines that require onerous food additive and drug like notifications, excessive testing and documentation will make the introduction of new products unnecessarily expensive.

CODEX ALIMENTARUS (CA) is a draconian set of regulations and laws which will change your life forever if you use vitamins, minerals, herbs or other natural healing for your health care and you live in the United States. And, make no mistake, CA is coming to you in the United States. Once it gets here, it will be ILLEGAL to buy, sell, recommend or use any but 18 ultra-low dose nutrients, natural supplements, herbs, enzymes or other natural treatments whether you are a licensed health professional or not.

The only legal health option left will be the pharmaceutical one. I believe that if we allow this to happen the people of the United States will, after a period of dazed disbelief, gradually begin to re-assert their lost health freedoms. Since doing so will mean flouting the law of the land, the result will either be a brief storm followed by collapse of all health freedoms in the United States or a full-scale and wide-spread time of dissent, civil unrest and resultant repression as the authorities seek to re-establish their control over a resistant population.

After all, if you are watching your loved one suffering or dying from a degenerative disease which research has shown to respond to a simple nutrient regimen, would you sit idly by and allow him/her to continue to decline rather than try to obtain the vitamins or minerals which will restore the person you care about? But these nutreints, so easily purchased today, will be illegal substances under the coming CA regulations. This scenario seems unlikely in the context of our current health climate here in the US. But CA will destroy this climate of choice swiftly and virtually completely if we do not act now.

CA has become the law in the EU, Canada and Australia. The US is next unless we act decisively. It was passed quietly and without public notice but it has grave and devastating impact on health freedom. Here in the United States, CA has been defeated by Congress several times, each time by a smaller margin. Given the political composition of the Congress, it is virtually certain that CA will be passed unless we make sure that does not happen.

NUTRIENTS AND SUPPLEMENTS: CA specifies which supplements are allowed and at what doses. ALL OTHER NUTRITIONAL MATERIALS WILL BECOME ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES (LIKE HEROIN OR MARIJUANA). A total of 18 nutrients will be allowed, but only at dosages so low that they have little or no clinical impact. Vitamin C, for example, at any dosage higher than 200 mg per day will be illegal, with or without a prescription. A gram of Vitamin C or 1000 mg of Niacin (Vit B3) will be as illegal as a gram of crack cocaine.

HERBS: CA stipulates which conditions may be treated using herbs. Only minor, self-limited conditions may be treated by these natural compounds. Treating any other conditions with herbal remedies will constitute a federal crime.

TOXINS: CA sets permissible upper limits for pesticide residues, toxic chemicals in the environment, hormones in food and other environmental contaminants which are many times higher than levels advocated by chemical and pesticide industry lobbying groups.

IRRADIATION OF FOOD: CA makes irradiation of food legal under circumstances now hotly contested by food safety advocates.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: CA makes the un-labeled use of GMOs legal in all foods under all circumstances although there is significant opposition to the widespread use of GMOs at this time. Many GMOs have been genetically engineered so that seeds WILL NOT GERMINATE without the use of specific pesticides.

NO HEALTH REPRESENTATION: CA has been formulated (and is being expanded) by the CODEX ALLIMENTARIUS COMMISSION which meets without the presence or participation of consumer or health advocates, supplement manufactures, natural health professionals or any other non-pharmaceutically oriented group.

HOW TO DO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE FROM CA:

1. Become informed. Go to [link] or do a web search on CODEX ALIMENTARIUS. Remember that much of what you read is designed to put a very pretty face on a very ugly reality and lull the public into feeling comfortable with CA.

2. Contact your Senators and Representatives: Write a strongly worded letter telling your Congress Person that you want them to defend your health rights and preserve your access to natural treatments and supplements. In the algebra of politics, one fax or posted letter is counted as equal to 13,000 votes! See the sample letter at the end of this post.

3. Inform everyone you know: Tell your clients, friends, relatives, neighbors, health food store owners, health practitioners and everyone else you can think of about CA and what they can do to protect themselves. Reproduce this blog and share it with them.

4. Give printed copies of a letter like the one below to people so they can fill in the name of their Congress People, sign and mail it. Emails do not have the impact of actual faxes or letters. A woman who succeeded in getting a federal law changed by herself was told that, in the peculiar algebra of politics, a single letter is assumed to represent the voices of 13,000 voters. So get everyone you know to actually write or fax letters to their members of Congress.

That bunch of traitors in DC is responsible for allowing this to happen. They are the ones who are signing us into all of these treaties/agreements/pacts. Obviously, they have forgotten about our Constitution. What's even worse is that the Supreme Court Justices have too. What are we going to have to do to open their eyes? They don't seem to listen to what we are telling them.

Why is it that ephedra herb killed a few people, less than 160 nationwide and it was pulled off the shelves while COX 2 inhibitors killed almost 60,000 was pulled off the shelves for a month and now the Govt. says they can start going back into production? The FDA panel voted 31-1 to allow Celebrex to stay on the market, 17-13 in favor of Bextra, and 17-15 in favor of Vioxx.

Believe me, herbs are the least of our problems.

The problem with mass production of herbal remedies is that the process is not well supervised. Microbes and other extraneous particulate can find their way into your bottle and cause you greater harm than good.

So what?

If they have the Generally Regarded As Safe designation, then they are the same quality as food products with respect to microbes and other particulates. People can choose to take them or not take them at their own risk.

Why should it be up to you, your wife, or any gov't employee whether people can take supplements that are GRAS designated? You are proposing the extension of the nanny state. You'll find a very receptive home at DU for your ideas, no doubt.

GRAS designation is fine and like I already said, I'm quite comfortable with you ingesting (or whatever) the herb of your choice.

I am merely stating that production controls are lacking in comparison to pharmaceutical controls. Foodstuffs such as beef and poultry have more outside inspection and that's not saying a lot!

I'm actually in favor of private, independent rating agencies that can audit SOPs and methods and provide a rating for not just herbal companies but consumer goods as well. This way consumers can be more knowledgeable about the quality of what they are purchasing and ingesting. It certainly should not be the UN doing this job.
