The UFO Phenomenon - Seeing Is Believing (Peter Jennings tonight - Live Thread)
ABC News ^ | Feb. 24, 2005

Posted on 02/24/2005 3:55:40 PM PST by traumer

Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.

For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered — and a great deal not fully explained."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" airs Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-10 p.m. ET on ABC. The program will be broadcast in High Definition.

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience — from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 — Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 — Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 — Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by … a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

Sudden credibility afforded the UFO phenomena by the MSM. How interesting. And predictable to those who believe a rapture is forthcoming. (Please note: I have NO desire to debate that issue; I'm simply directing a comment to those who believe as I do.) I've often thought about how the rapture occurring should make believers out of everybody left behind, even though the Bible makes clear that this won't be the case.

Given the blindness and gullibility of people today, I have no problem believing that the masses will believe the nonsense that will be cooked up to explain the instantaneous disappearance of a billion or so folks. And I wouldn't be surprised in the least to learn that this new MSM coverage is laying the groundwork for such explanations. (Not necessarily intentionally on the part of the MSM.)

ANTI-CHRIST, ALIENS, AND UFO'S
Consider the a few of the instances of TV shows and movies which have carried the alien theme:

* Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
* Star Trek
* E.T.
* Alf
* Mork and Mindy
* Star Wars Trilogy
* Star Man
* TV UFO "documentaries" abound, including "Unsolved Mysteries"
* CBS Movie, "Intruders", two-part series in May, 1992

Let us pause our examination of this UFO/Alien phenomenon for a few moments as we examine the time frame in which we are living, and the applicable Biblical framework.

I believe in the possibility of UFOs, but I don't believe they are extraterrestial craft...extra-dimensional, perhaps. There have been a bunch of Von Dehnegen(sp?)-like speculations over the years that the biblical accounts of angelic visitations were really "ancient astronaunts" from other worlds. To the contray, I think it highly likely that sitings of "extraterrestial craft" today could actually be angelic visitations.

However, the distances (and the time it would take to cross them, even at the speed of light) involved are so incomprehensibly enormous (given the relative shortness of individual human lifespans) that it's effectively impossible that anybody has been able to do it.

Aaarrrgggghhhh.... quit thinking linearly....

This is what a wormhole is ... I KNOW you've heard it mentioned countless times on Star Trek, and you have had to have heard of 'Hyperspace'. You 'simply' fold normal space, create the wormhole, hop a relatively SHORT distance to your destination, and then allow the wormhole to collapse (ie normal space to 'spring' back). Now, as for the near infinite amount of energy required to do this .... that's a totally different subject.

"This is what Peter Jennings career has come to.
How pathetic.
But then again, I'm more optimistic about seeing a UFO then I am ever getting a social security check."

You nailed the essence right from the get go.

What about ALF? You forgot him. How about the Coneheads--was SNL priming the world for the ultimate revelation?

I agree with you, sorry if my post seemed directed at you ... my mistake.

I would be very surprized if we are not bending space in the laboratories in the next 30 years. I don't see us using this as a means of transportation in my lifetime, but I do expect that some experiments will be done.

What seems 'impossible' today, is simply something we'll put off until tomorrow.

I have to stand back in total awe at the group think that is evident now and was not here several years ago.

It's ALWAYS been that way.

Just ask NaL.

This is a picture of the Milky Way Galaxy.

No. It is not a picture of the Milky Way Galaxy. It is picture of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31).

I can see how someone who believes that a picture of our Milky Way Galaxy could or does exist would get confused about the science of UFOs.

>>Maybe some of these craft are automonous, and are capable of extreme manueverability that would crush a human pilot with tsunmi-like G-Forces.

My Pop saw something weird over his airbase that was flying then took an immediate 90 degree turn and moved faster than any missile he had ever seen. A true UFO--he had no clue what it was, he doesn't think it was alien, but it was unidentified and definitely flying. That's about all he had to say about it.

I could see test machines in the 1990s doing this or maybe even earlier. But in 1962? We must have had one heck of a research division.

Hmmm...you may have something there. Gotta digest it a bit, but that is a really astute observation, if it proves out.
