Virginia man charged in alleged plot to assassinate Bush By MATTHEW BARAKAT

Associated Press Writer

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A former high school valedictorian in Virginia was charged Tuesday with conspiring to assassinate President Bush and conspiracy to support the al-Qaida terrorist network.

Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, 23, a U.S. citizen, made an initial appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court. He claimed that he was tortured while detained in Saudi Arabia since June of 2003 and offered through his lawyer to show the judge his scars.

The indictment said that in 2002 and 2003 Abu Ali and an unidentified coconspirator discussed plans for Abu Ali to assassinate Bush. They discussed two scenarios, the indictment said, one in which Abu Ali "would get close enough to the president to shoot him on the street" and, alternatively, "an operation in which Abu Ali would detonate a car bomb."

" There are some 'Christian Identity' type groups here that encourage violence, for instance."

When they declare war and commit an act of war that would become relevant. Until then, it's relativism.

I would like them to stop stressing it in every paragraph of every article. It's being used as a keyphrase to obscure any other facts which come to light later in the case.

I disagree. I think it is extremely important that we get it in our heads that all the hyperventilating over the border (yes, I am for securing the borders) and here is (yet another) a born and raised American who set off to join al Qaeda. Ignore this salient bit of info at your peril.

"He was tortured," Nubani told the court. "He has the evidence on his back. He was whipped. He was handcuffed for days at a time."

"When Nubani offered to show the judge his back, O'Grady said that Abu Ali might be able to enter that as evidence on Thursday at a detention hearing."

Oh, you mean those self-inficted, or purposely created by co-terrorists scars to offer as (phoney) evidence? And we should take pity on you for your suffering, right?

Ok...let's get a doctor to look at those scars. It will be easy to ascertain if they healed with the assistance of proper treatment (i.e. "clean") as would happen if they were "staged" and he was whipped just to give some authenticity to his supposed suffering claims.

Or, was he left without proper care while the wounds festered and healed improperly - as would happen if the whippings were truly done by ones who wanted to cause harm and left him to suffer with no treatment to the areas.

Was he born here or just doing the jobs Americans refuse to do?

Born here.

So your latter point is moot in this case.

It appears (and I may be too lazy to see if others posted it) but C.A.I.R. tried to spring this guy from prison, sending letters (ironically enough) to President Bush to get him out of prison.

"Mr. Nubani is licensed to practice Law in New York and Virginia, and specializes in immigration law. He has worked on many high profile cases, including: Global Relief Foundation

"The U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago (7th Cir.) last week affirmed a lower court's dismissal of a libel lawsuit by an Islamic charity against six media organizations and eight reporters. The court found that the media organizations' news stories about the government investigating the Global Relief Foundation for possible ties to terrorism were substantially true." RCFP - 12/7/2004

It appears he was detained in Saudi before 9-11. Something like June 2001 if I am not mistaken.

How does this guy's (claimed) torture by the Saudis make him any less responsible?

I can think of a million excuses for a time when people are standing before a judge....

Let's think about standing before a grand jury to be indicted on charges of conspiring to kill the President. What are ya going to say?

I was raised in poverty!
My parents were drug abusers!
I have a drug addiction!
I was ridiculed by my peers all through high school!

..and the list goes on and on and on...in ad nauseum.

No....the sad fact is that this kid is a "Rod'er" (Religion of Death'er) and he thinks our beloved Commander in Chief is evil and needs to die.

I hate to break the news, but statistically, and historically, people who are taken into custody for the charges levied against him don't usually gain their freedom back any time soon.

BUT now this young man is firmly in the hand of his enemy! May God grant wisdom and dilligence to our U.S. Secret Service!

If what this kid says about the Saudis is true, then he knows if he had been charged similarly in Saudi Arabia, he would soon be dead. He "should" contrast this to the justice and mercy that he is receiving even now, here in this great nation of ours. But I doubt he will. I hope they roast his hatefull little carcass, but that's just me.

That did occur to me and I'm for securing the borders too. What we actually seem to be disagreeing over is not the reporting of his native country but the way in which the media is stressing it.

Really. That's the charity that Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald charges that New York Times report Philip Shenon tipped off that a raid of their offices was imminent:

TIMESMAN TIPPED OFF TERROR CHARITY: FEDS (NY Times Correspondent Accused)

Incidentally, his colleague, Judith Miller, who was just found in contempt in the Plame case is also wanted for testimony in the Shenon investigation.

excerpt:

September 29, 2004 -- The Justice Department has charged that a veteran New York Times foreign correspondent warned an alleged terror-funding Islamic charity that the FBI was about to raid its office — potentially endangering the lives of federal agents.

The stunning accusation was disclosed yesterday in legal papers related to a lawsuit the Times filed in Manhattan federal court.

The suit seeks to block subpoenas from the Justice Department for phone records of two of its Middle Eastern reporters — Philip Shenon and Judith Miller — as part of a probe to track down the leak.

The Times last night flatly denied the allegation.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago charged in court papers that Shenon blew the cover on the Dec. 14, 2001, raid of the Global Relief Foundation — the first charges of their kind under broad new investigatory powers given to the feds under the Patriot Act.

"It has been conclusively established that Global Relief Foundation learned of the search from reporter Philip Shenon of The New York Times," Fitzgerald said in an Aug. 7, 2002, letter to the Times' legal department.

He said he understood journalists' concerns about protecting the identities of their sources, but national security and preventing leaks that thwart probes into "terrorist fund-raising" trump such confidentiality.

"A former high school valedictorian in Virginia..."

I bet he was also a milk monitor in kindergarten and always volunteered to clean the chalk boards after school and reminded teachers when they forgot to mention the evening's homework assignment. Suck ups. Gotta watch those guys, it's the power. It goes right to their heads.
